~~UO~~

I don't see a UO post for today, and I'm pretty sure it's Thursday... ::checks Outlook calendar to verify::

So ladies, let's have those unpopular (as in, few people agree with you) opinions.  No popular opinions allowed here!

Re: ~~UO~~

  • Hmm, no takers yet.  Guess I'll get us started then.

I think that people who buy a new car right off the lot and finance it are financial idiots.  Unless you've got so much extra cash sitting around that you can buy the brand new car outright, then you probably should be buying a used car.

I can never think of an UO, but I totally agree with yours!! I frequently wonder who it is that actually buys those brand new cars. I always get one that's about a year old with 15k miles or so.

My 15 year old sister asked me if liked to cook at her age. I told her that I really didn't cook anything until I was married. My mom always did everything for me, laundry, cooking, cleaning, ect. I feel like I was totally unprepared for the real world.

I think that it's fine to hope that you receive items at your baby shower that you wouldn't otherwise be able to afford or would otherwise not buy (as long as you are able to get your child everything he/she actually needs).

I don't mean that you should expect to get everything you need at a shower but (esp on the Baby Shower Board) I often see people say that you shouldn't hope to receive something that you wouldn't buy your kid because you are its parent, etc and etc.

    I love my new cars.
I will probably never buy used again. I hate having to fix even little things on a car. I'd rather not even have to think about it.

Oh I think kids should have to take financial classes (like financial peace university) before they leave the house. We made STUPID choices when it came to buying a car and not paying off credit cards.

But, his must do chores have to be done before he can do a earning money chore.

  • Yay, I'm finally on here early enough to join in!

I cannot stand seeing people driving vehicles with dogs on their laps.  I see this far too often.  Which makes me think a lot of people think it's ok (popular?)  I don't care if your dog is tiny, or well trained, or whatever.  First, the dog is a distraction and can at any moment decide to jump up to kiss you and obstruct your vision, or hop down by your feet and interfere with your brakes.  Second, for those who have their windows rolled down, the dog could fall ot or jump out.  When they are on your laps they are propped up higher to the level of the window and are at a greater risk of jumping or falling.  Oh, and what if you ave to slam on your breaks??  Poor pup is going to fly into the windshield.  I just think it's irresponsible, for the safety of other people on the road AND the dog itself.

In addition, I am a proud and responsible dog owner.  Of a small dog (my profile pic).  Not only is he designated to the back seat, he also has a doggy seatbelt for long trips which keeps him safe in case the breaks have to be applied.

It's just that it depreciates so much as soon as you drive it off the lot.  If you bought a used car that was only a year old, you would still get many worry-free years and miles from it and not have that huge fresh-off-the-lot depreciation.

But, if you want to keep buying new cars, that's fine with me!  Somebody needs to so that I can keep buying them used Wink

  • Mine is work related, but I work with babies so I'll go ahead and share....

Mom tries to breastfeed, baby is not getting any colostrum etc. But mom is adamant about ONLY breastfeeding, no bottle supplement. So 12 hours after birth, baby is in the NICU for low blood sugars. I can't tell you how many moms would rather have their babies poked several times for an IV to get fluids, not to mention have their heel poked every 2 to 3 hours for blood sugars, rather than give their baby a SMALL amount of formula after attempting to BF!! I am pro breast feeding, don't get me wrong, but WHYYY would you rather have your baby suffer through all that rather than give them a bottle?!?! Ugh!!!!!

Yea but you loose the warranty buying used. Cars can and will fall apart and that's where you will be spending your money. So really either way will suck your wallet dry. Plus, depending on how someone drives, a year of miles might be more than 15,000. I bought my car last January and I have 50,000 miles on it. Buying used and leasing are not an option for me.

That is INSANE to me. And at that point, it seems selfish. If its to the point that the baby needs IV fluids, give them formula!!

You would be surprised how often we have to deal with that!! As a nurse I know my opinions can be a little different than others, but when it comes to such an easy fix as giving a little bit of formula, I am talking maybe half an ounce, why would you NOT do it?!?!

  • If I'm out in public (supermarket, store, restaurant, etc) and there is a kid behaving obnoxiously (running around, yelling, etc) and the parents/adults are ignoring what's going on, first I'll try my " death glare" and maybe shake my head silently, and then I'll say something directly to the child. I'm not talking about crying babies, I'm saying kids who are old enough that I'm sure a teacher or another adult has said things to them before that they know the difference, they just aren't expected to behave with their parents.  I really don't care if the parents get annoyed.  If they were paying attention and making their kid behave appropriately, I wouldn't have to say anything.

I disagree.  I think there are times when buying a new car makes more financial sense.  If you can finance that new car for less interest than you're collecting on an interest bearing account (stocks, whatever) then it makes more sense to finance the car than to drop all the cash at once. (I understand that stocks are unreliable, not trying to get into that discussion) Also, if you buy brand new and keep the car for the whole life of the car (assuming you follow the maintenance schedule and take care of it) instead of trading it in once you pay it off, then you could potentially be paying less per year to own a new car than to own a cheaper used car for less amount of time.

I don't think it's a good idea for just anyone, but it's possible to be financially savvy about buying a brand spankin' new car.

I haven't had coffee yet this morning, so I hope that made some sort of sense.

You do make some good points, but here's a few counterpoints.

1.If someone offers you financing at a lower % than you're making on your interest-bearing accounts, they're adding the cost of that financing into the cost of the car.  No lending institution loans money at a loss to themselves.

    2. When you finance the car, unless you put a large amount of money down, it depreciates faster than you pay it off.  That means most people who finance a new car are "upside down" on the loan.  So if something happens to the car, it's actually a financial liability.  Yes, insurance can temper that loss, but really good insurance is expensive, and there's always your deductible to cover.

    3. The kind of person who buys a new car is rarely the kind of person who drives it for the entire life of the car.  Though you're right, if you do that, it may be an okay decision--if you didn't finance it.

My parents bought an inexpensive new car in 1999, paid cash, and have driven 240,000 miles on that car.  A sound financial decision, but they're the exception not the rule.

  • I think the car thing prob varies person to person. DH bought his '09 Xterra brand spankin new in Nov '08... It was one of the first dealers in MD to have the '09 models. I bought my '06 X3 in April '10 with 73k miles on it. There are pluses and minuses to buying both new and used. DH just paid his off this past winter and mine will be paid off within a year or so hopefully and we are both planning on driving the cars until we can't anymore... Hopefully like 5 more years. Not sure if I will go used again, if I want a German car I will have to go used for the price.

I think paying them, a small amount of course, will teach them financial responsibility.  The chores would be mandatory but they'd get a little something to save or spend as they choose. I would give my kids an allowance but they wouldn't get it if they didn't hold up their chores.

This sorta goes along with parking, I HATE expecting mothers parking. Just because your pregnant doesn't mean you shouldn't be walking! I sorta think ppl are lazy that actually use the spots. I always park towards the end of lots just to get some extra exercise! I live in an area where obesity is a HUGE problem, no pun intended lol. Ppl should stop worrying so much about how close they park to the doors! Unless maybe your running late!

We tried two different types of seatbelts with our little dogs. They threw up within minutes of being in them. Now they sit in the passenger seat and look out the (rolled up) window. My neighbors dog jumped out of his truck when I was walking my dogs, and it scared the crap out of me. The poor dog landed on its neck and the guy didn't seem to be worried at all.

As a veterinarian, I've seen some horrible car-related injuries come into my clinic.  I've seen cases where the animal being loose in the car has actually caused the accident.  I've seen a few where the animal has jumped out of the open window, including a few really horrible fatalities.  I've also had clients who have gotten into a car accident with a pet in the car, broken a few windows or the door of the car has flown open, and the pet has escaped onto the highway to be hit by another car or run away and not be found again.

I don't care if my cat is going to cry, pee, or throw up in his carrier.  I'll use disposable puppy pads and stop to change them if I need to, but he is going in a carrier, strapped into the seat.

For sure? Actually my car now is the only car I have ever bought with miles on it. A demo car, I think like 5,000. I am 10,000 miles over the warranty for the new parts I need. Nothing crucial but still it sucks. I am also someone who drives their car into the ground. I will have 200,000 miles in this before I think about getting rid of it.

Haha. My DH loves going to BRU and BBB because he loves having the excuse to park in those spots. Funny though, he is a health freak/body builder type. I don't really ever park in those OBTLC spots on my own time though, just him when he's with me.

Your big toe nail should not hang over the tip of your toe. Do you like buying bigger shoes to accommodate your bedazzled pedicure?

i thought this was a picture of your foot...and i was like i thought you hated toe rings!

but i agree with all your points. i cut my toe nails before i get a pedicure bc i don't trust that they will make them short enough. also i hate toe rings.

and to add on to this theme...i hate feet! make them look presentable and upkeep them with polish etc. but feet are not pretty so lets not flaunt them!

I'm 5'10, this is a mini girl foot lol I have long monkey toes. I cut all my nails before I go too cause they never do get them short enough.

Amen. I work at Michael's and pier one and parents just literally let their children run up and down the isles of the store. The kids pull everything off the shelves and when we are getting ready to close, and have spent all day putting stuff back where it belongs it's even worse. Thankfully I have a manager who is not afraid to tell parents to leave and or watch your kid. I don't care if people get offended, the store employees are not responsible for watching your children.

I disagree, in that it is a case-by-case thing and for some people it is very helpful.  I suffer from SPD, a rotated pelvis & lower spine, and sciatica.  I go to physical therapy for the pain.  My PT even went so far as to mention that I could consider looking at renting a walker or crutches from Red Cross.

So not every pregnant woman is "lazy".  I feel that the less amount of stress on my body is healthier for me and in this heat, with as sloooooooow as I walk (I mean waddle/limp) I would be doing more harm than good.

I haven't had coffee yet this morning, so I hope that made some sort of sense.

I agree. Growing up, my parents always bought new cars, but my DH's family always bought preowned. We bought our first car together after we got married and decided to buy preowned and ended up having to fixed a few things on it after a couple months. I think it all depends on one's financial situation and preference. I don't thinking buying a brand new car is for everyone, but it sure is nice!

Hmm, no takers yet.nbsp; Guess I'll get us started then.I think that people who buy a new car right off the lot and finance it are financial idiots.nbsp; Unless you've got so much extra cash sitting around that you can buy the brand new car outright, then you probably should be buying a used car.

Totally disagree with this. I've only bought new since becoming an adult.I would never pay in full because I get zero percent interest..I also have always paid well below the msrp. Financially, it makes much more sense for me to get a new car. I've priced out the different options many times. I

I use those now. I didn't during the first trimester, but its 110+ here during the summer, so I am definitely not parking way out just to get some extra exercise. It's what the spots are there for. My OB actually tells us to avoid being outside at all during the summer, so I take that as full support on parking in the spots. (Posting and running, gotta go to work!)

I won't wait for one, but if it's open I take it.

I HATE pink sports apparel....They are not the Pink Sox...they are the RED Sox (or White Sox). There are plenty of "girly" options in the correct team colors...but really who cares, at sports games you are not trying to be "girly" you are there to watch the game. if you are not interested don't go!

Ugh I cannot agree more.  As an avid Baltimore sports fan, nothing p's me off more than seeing a pink Flacco jersey or pink Orioles clothes.  Real fans wear the colors of their team.  And although you and I may disagree on this (lol) I happen to think our Baltimore colors are awesome and why would anyone want to crap them up with pink!?  I say this being a very girly person and loving almost everything else pink in the world.

  • First time to participate in UO Thursday! This is similar to a previous post, but mine relates specifically to the grocery store. I cannot stand going to the grocery store on a weekday when all the moms bring their kids and let them each have a miniature cart to push around and go crazy running through the store with. Just this past Monday a mom had 3 boys under 5 each with a little cart... They all ran in 3 different directions of the produce area and she just kept on shopping. When she was ready to move to a different section she would proceed to YELL for them to follow her. I hate those tiny carts... I can't even see them most of the time!

Me too! I definitely didn't in first tri when I was feeling great and not showing at all, but now when I pull up to BBB and those spots are ALL open and the ones behind them are more crowded, you better bet I'm taking the close spot that is open. Especially when it is 90+ degrees and 100% humidity here.

    Not lazy at all.

Have you ever tried to get parts covered by the warranty on your vehicle?

I'm not really sure if that was a yes or no answer.   My experience with the warranty on my vehicle (which my mom encouraged me to pay extra for the platinum super duper package!) was that when something broke, I would call the company to get it covered under warranty and they would have some fantastic wording and reasoning as to why it wouldn't be covered.  I also learned the hard way that if your mechanic is an idiot and can't figure out an issue for two years and finally realizes what is wrong but you have exceeded the mileage covered on your warranty, they will not honor the mileage of when you originally reported the problem.
