Cloth Diapering

Diaper Service vs Purchsing your own

I'm almost 4 months pregnant w/ our first and am set on doing cloth diapering.  I'm just wondering if anyone has had any experience w/ using a diaper service vs buying your own diapers?

Would you choose one or the other?  What are the pros and cons of each?  And any other info you have to share would be great.  TIA!

Re: Diaper Service vs Purchsing your own

  • In my area diaper services cost as much or more than disposables. So the only way I would ever use one is if I did not have my own washing machine. Plus they only do prefolds. I like prefolds, but prefer to have other diapers as well.

  • I knew I wanted to CD but was overwhelmed by the choices and knew I would be overwhelmed by learning to wash and actually doing the laundry being a new mom.  So we decided to use a diaper service for the first month.  It ended up that the next 2 months were gifted to us so we used the service for a total of 3 months which took us up to the point where he would fit into one size diapers and covers.  I am so glad we started with the service.  It took a lot of pressure off of me as a new mom.

The main con is the cost.  In my area the cost really is about the same as if you were using disposables which is fine for a while but adds up after a while and my main reason for wanting to use CDs was to save money.  So after the 1st 3 months we bought our own stash of diapers and have been happy ever since!  If we did not have our own washer/dryer I would probably use the diaper service instead of buying my own stash just for the health of my baby and the environmental factor.

  • Thank you.  Very helpful.  I think we'll use a service, at least for the few months just for that reason.  I've priced them out and the services in our area are actually relatively cheap compared to disposable.

Maybe after our child is a few months old we'll re-evaluate the situation.

    Thanks again.
