I love lurking the baby name board

Well I was snooping around and I found this one right away

"...my beautiful baby girl was born last night !
Anahi Giovanna Judith, best feeling ever being a mom .
While in my room, I hear the nurses talking about a baby who was born down the hall. HIS name is Promise Diamond ... Made me giggle !"

Umm, really? This from the lady who named her kid Anahi? That sounds like a noise you make when you sneeze. So my question is : What is the most ridiculous name you have ever heard in real life?

I will kick it off with a name I assumed was an urban legend until I encountered one, La-ah. You think it would be pronounced La (as in a note to follow So) ah (like when you are relieved and say ahhhh). But nope its LA DASH AH?.you pronounces the dash! This was the name of one of my BFF?s students. I didn?t believe her until she was grading homework and I saw it on a work sheet?so sad!

  • My ex-husband played high school football against a guy named Sha-Teed.  Only problem?  It was spelled Sh!thead.  And one of my former headmaster's was married to a MW who had a client name her daughter Formica Dinette.

And ChiAmy - I am not advocating making fun of other cultures.  But these names are not cultural.  They are just ridiculous.

I've seen 2 women named Unique, but neither was spelled that way. I don't remember the actual spelling, because it was a while ago. I believe one of them was "Uneek" or some very similar spelling.

Both times the name was seen on a criminal indictment.

  • "Icantina Turner". say it out loud.
  • "so come on, come onn do the locomotion with me!"
  • I think you have to take in consideration that people from different cultures name differently.

Meh Anahi is a real name though.

Oh, sorry, I was referring to the names I used in my post.  Re-reading, that wasn't particularly clear.

    omg. so sad!

Yes I get that. If I have a boy his middle name will be Raamz (pronounced Ra-Miz) it?s a cultural name. La-ah and Sh!thead are not cultural names. I just though it was odd that a mom who chose an odd name for her child would smack talk another mom who picked an odd name.

    Cengle-

That name should be considered criminal

    Hendsa01-

Please tell me that someone went Ike Turner on those parents!

  • My friend is a pediatrician, and a mother brought her new baby, Ladynasty (pronounced Lah-dynasty), in for her first check up. My friend took one look at the chart, and said, "So how is our little Lady Nasty doing?" Whoops! Pretty sure that's how you know you've got a name fail.
  • There is a family from near where I grew up.  Their last name was Sweet.  First names of the 4 daughters (not sure if they had other kids) were:

    Always, Very, Really, and Forever

And no, they weren't nicknames or anything.  Those are their real names (I think at least a couple are now married, though).

  • Ya I like Anahi too, it's different, but I like it. I also don't knock names, mine is extremely different because of my ethnicity and my children's names will be different too. That's why I don't even talk about it, I don't need or want people's opinions. It's a cultural thing and I'm sure when I have my baby if I announce the name here I may get people saying why would I name them that because you can't pronounce it or it's difference blah blah, I don't care, it'll be beautiful and it's important to my family. :mobile smiley:

  • La-a is not one of your BFF's students. it IS an urban legend.

having said that, there's a possibility that in the past year, parents have started turning the urban legend into a true story. BUT, in order for the kid to have written their name on their worksheet, they'd have to be at least 5. so, no.

There are plenty of names that aren't my style. Good thing those children aren't mine and the parents didn't ask if I liked it or not.

The only names I really, truly hate are the ridiculous ones like "Very" and "Jermajesty" (side note: Pretty sure I heard that Ladynasty story told as a joke in middle school) and the ones where people take beautiful, classic names and butcher the spellings to suit their own selfish needs for individuality. It's ok if your kid isn't the only Daniel. DO NOT name him Danyal.

  • I preface this statement with the fact that I know this was a cultural issue, but still so unfortunate for the poor little guy. My aunt had a little boy from Vietnam in her class one year who's name was Twat Dang. I felt horrible for that kid. Totally not a bad name, in his culture, but going to school in America will be hard for him. :[ She also had two girls in her class that year that were named Funky and Blue Diamond.

But it may not be an odd name to her, I think that may be ChiAmy's point, I know it is mine.

Right but the point I was getting at is that lady is probably aware that is an ?odd name.? I love the name Raamz but I am fully aware I am going to get a lot of ?what how the hell do you say that?? remarks. I only find them funny when they are totally out there.

Example I went to school with a girl named Kow (pronounced Cow). That is obviously a cultural name. But my friend who is an EMT who had a child born in his ambulance named Orangejello (Or-on-ja-low) but it was just the words ?orange jello? together because the mom only craved orange jello while pregnant?that is just mean, and cringe worthy!

Her name is Ima but my step dads last name is Pigg. So she's Ima Pigg. She changed her name back to her maiden name because she was tired of the comments.

In one of my college classes there was a boy who was from China and chose an ?American? name to go by at all times.  He chose Harry.  His last name was Dong.

That's too funny I know a Michael Hunt also who goes by Mike. My SO knows a man name Richard Rash. He goes by D!ck.

These HAVE to be cases where the parents didn't consult anyone on their name choices, and by the time they announced the name, it was too late for anyone to say anything. I'm pretty sure that if they had run these by at least one person, all could have been avoided.

I don't doubt your friend told you they had a La-a, but I don't believe it. It's an urban legend.

If there were as many La-a's running around as people who claimed to know one (or more often, who claimed to know someone who knew one) it'd be a top 10 name.

Oh no I saw the name on some home work that bad boy was for real!

As for ethnic names, fine if raising kid in your home land.  But if raising kid here in the states try to think of the burden you are placing on them and the fact they have to live with this name the rest of their life.  This name will go with them to school, college, out into job market, etc.

Oh wow, I wonder if their parents know what a dork is? The real meaning that is? Also, I knew a Darcus and always thought that was weird. People were mean and called her Dorcus

I've actually known a couple of people named Dorcas.  It's a name in the Bible (It's one of the epistles, it's Dorcas, also known as Lydia, I think).  I grew up in a fairly religious area, so it was actually way more common than someone would think.

Dorcus is a Biblical name well in some versions I think her name is Tabitha anyway my mom was going to name me Brandy and my great Gma threw a fit. Since Brandy is an alcohol and Gma wanted me to have a nice biblical name..like Dorcus..yeah I'm really glad my mom thought that one through and named me after her maiden name instead!

Yeah, I don't get how people don't put the first and last name together and sounding it out BEFORE naming the kid.

My favorite boy name is Gabe (Gabriel),  However, Gabe combined with my married last name sounds like "gay (body part)".  I figured this out long before I even got pregnant, so Gabe is a no-go for us.

ETA: Just in case, I should probably clarify: we're not using the name so that our kid doesn't get made fun of in school. Not because we're homophobic (we're about the furthest thing from it).

I don't think of it as a "burden" to have a different name. I think that's kinda harsh. People would pronounce my name wrong and I'd say oh you say it like this, it's Croatian. And they would say oh I've never heard of it, it's beautiful. And I'd say my name being different gives me an advantage, it's not a burden in any way, they are curious about me and my background way more simply because of my name. But I get it, that's your opinion and this is mine.

Yes, I do recall that name from the Bible but I think the other name was Tabitha. This was a girl I grew up with so the kids were just trying to be mean rather than make a Biblical reference lol. Speaking of the Bible, that's what my Dad used to teach me to read haha. He said if I could read Nebuchadnezzar, I could read anything.

Yep, Tabitha is the right name.  I tend to zone out during the Epistle readings - I dislike Paul.  But regardless of your religious leanings, the Bible isn't a bad way to go with teaching someone to read.  A lot of difficult words and such.

And along the same lines, my Dad wanted my first word to be podium.

Good to see every single Urban Legend name has cropped up in here.

Except my mom actually helped birth twins and the mother did name the twins lemonjello and orangejello. On the birth cert. and everything... sooo they are not really urban legends people actually give their kids these crazy names.
