FB: Birth Play By Play

I just witnessed the play by play from induction to birth of a girls niece on FB. She updated her dilation progress each time her sister was checked. Informed us all when she was 10 cm, then when she was pushing.... and still pushing. Then once baby was born she announced the birth time/weight/length.

I would seriously murder a person if they did that to me!

Who would want their dilation progress announced to hundreds of people on FB? I would be beyond embarrassed and angry!

ETA: She just added pictures of the fresh slimy newborn.

  • Loading the player...
  • I would be livid if when I was able to, or even thought about checking social media again, my entire labor was broadcast for the world to see! Ugh! Murder...murder comes to mind...

  • Ummm...no!  I doubt we'll even update our families that detailed.  Our wills probably get a "On the way to the hospital" notification and then a "Here's baby" notification.  And there will definitely be a "please no Fb" disclaimer to all of it!  I can't stand when other people are the ones to post news about someone's baby!

  • I have friends who post play by plays of their life but I think this sets a new record!
    image

  • Wow! That is awful! I would not be happy if someone did this.  It's such a personal event that it shouldn't be a play by play on FB. But now reading this, I'll have to give a few people direction that this is not acceptable, and nothing is to be posted on FB until I am ready for it.

  • Yuck, this is why we're not even telling anyone when we head to the hospital. Friends and family will get calls a few hours after LO has been born. I'm hesitant to send any pics to anyone, because I don't want my baby plastered all over social media. I may go old school and only snail mail photos of DD.

  • I would be horrified if my sister was talking about my cervix on Facebook.

  • I would be so mad!! I seriously hope none of mine and SO family posts anything in Facebook until she is actually here. I've never really been a fan of Facebook!
  • LOL... "Fresh slimy newborn" makes me laugh!!!

  • Although I will think my slimy baby is gorgeous, I don't expect anyone else too! I'm going to spare the FB world pictures of my vernix covered baby.
  • I was actually just thinking about this earlier, how furious I would be if people posted pictures of me or LO when he's here on FB before we've even discharged from the hospital.

In fact when we told ILs about being pregnant, my MIL was "dying" because she had to wait four days to announce anything on FB because I hadn't told my family yet.

I think a FB disclaimer is a good idea with peoples addiction to the stupid website.

  • I have made it very clear to my husband that there will be no FB announcements of me going into labor or any details, or notifications to anyone else for that matter unless/until I say so.

Agreed! We had to skip my cousin's wedding in December, because my MIL threatened to tell her entire family if we missed a dinner and waited until Christmas. Because, clearly, it was her news to tell. Ugh. I just thank God daily she deleted her facebook...

Me too!! I joked with DH that we have to have a Social Media Birth Plan! No info goes on Facebook or twitter or whatever until I give the okay. Which will probably be when we get home from the hospital, although DH would be anxious to post on FB from the hospital. I just want to give family and close friends a chance to hear from us first before it goes on the Web.
  • That sucks.

I personally think some things should not be on fb for the world to see and that is one of them.  I'm also not a fan of u/s pics all over fb.

  • totally NOT COOL.

    I would be livid!

  • Ugh...aside from our immediate families (who would not ever post that info on FB) we don't plan on telling anyone we are in labor!  Additionally the only person who will post any kind of 1st pic of my baby on FB is me...whenever I'm ready to do it.  I highly doubt it will be a slimy, brand new, crotch exposed shot!

  • Wow. I would be so p!ssed. I certainly wouldn't want the world of FB to know the details of my cervix and I imagine no one would want to know anyway!

I'm sure MIL will post something about her grandchild being here with a picture or something. DH is an only child, so this is her first. I understand she's excited, but I'm not thrilled about the idea of my child being plastered on FB.

Ewww. This might be an instance where I would prefer vague-booking. :)

"The cleaning, the scrubbing will wait til tomorrow,
For children grow up, as I've learned to my sorrow.
So, quiet down cobwebs. Dust go to sleep.
I'm rocking my baby and babies don't keep."
  • It's one thing when you update about yourself (which that is still TMI), but to have someone else doing it is just.....weird. I would be pissed if a family member was giving a play by play of me too!

When I go in to actually have this LO, there will be no updates. I don't want anyone knowing we are actually having the baby until he is already here. And I honestly thought about banning fb pics and stuff like that at least until we are home so I don't have the wierd random drop ins in the hospital while we are trying to bond and I'm trying to learn to breastfeed.

  • Not that anyone on my FB would do that but I'm still planning on taking my FB wall down soon.  DH and I want to be the ones to "annouce" the birth. I hate seeing when people (especially outsiders) "annouce" other people's birth on Facebook by congratulating them before word is really out.

Ew! A friend of my DH did this about the birth of his daughter. He also posted a picture of his laboring GF. I told H is he posted any sweaty, gross pictures of me on FB, he would need a hospital bed too!

NO KIDDING!! There better not be any mention or update of any of my private parts on Facebook!

  • I've witnessed the actual woman in labor doing this! Granted, the updates always stop quite a bit before they stop pushing, but I've totally seen updates on dilation and effacement on Facebook. It's super creepy.

  • First of all, I would slap the mess outta my sister. Then I would make her delete each post and picture. That's just ridiculous!! And this is why only DH and I will be in the delivery room!!
  • Cell phones are banned in my presence while I'm in labor lol!
  • Ya, no thanks! FB will not know that I am even in labor. The important people that need to know what is going on, will.
  • The only people that will know I am in labor are my parents they live 5hrs away and who ever is watching dd1 for us. It will most likely be my mil. No one will be at the hospital other them dh and i and once I have dd we will call people and ask them not to post anything on FB until we do. This worked really well with dd1. I can't imagine someone posting about how dilated I was. I would be so pissed
