Stopping formula at 1

Wanting some advice, should we continue with toddler formula and cow's whole milk now that my daughter is 1? Or is whole milk enough alone? Do we give her ounces of water as well when she's not drinking whole milk? Should we add iron suppliments to her whole milk?

Re: Stopping formula at 1

  • We switched to whole milk at 11.5 months.  Just give around 20 oz's a day, water for the rest of the day.  You don't need iron supplements, she'll just get constipated.

  • I breastfed, but I introduced whole milk at 1. My Dr said no more than 16 oz a day, so we just limited him to that, but did not worry if he did not consume that much. I wouldn't worry about toddler formula unless you are concerned about a weight gain issue. Some Drs will do an iron test at one. Mine did not and said we did not need to worry about supplements. If he was thirsty, I offered water as well. It was sort of a test for us because sometimes if I offered milk between meals he wasn't hungry at meal time, so he could only have milk at meals for a while. Don't worry, there's not a science to it. Your LO will do just fine!

  • We started cows milk at 1.  She got a sippy cup full (8 oz) in the morning when she first gets up..has breakfast (cereal, toast, or egg) at 10ish or so.  Ate normal through the rest of the day and had 1/2 cup of milk at bedtime.  She has water with meals or throughout the day when she is thirsty.  If I remember correctly they need about 2 or 2-3 cups of milk a day (depending on where your getting advice), but if you are giving milk products (cheese and yogurts are big ones in our house) that contributes to the daily milk allowance.

She basically has the same schedule now at almost two actually.

I never gave my DD iron supplements...I probably should have when I was bfing but our dr (family practice) never instructed me to.  She had her iron tested around 18 months and her levels are fine.

  • I mixed the toddler formula and cows milk for the first couple of weeks because I thought that would help with the transition and We were going on a trip that getting milk whenever needed would have been difficult so the formula was easier. However, I don't think that would have been necessary otherwise.

I give my daughter water and a little bit of juice all day long. She drinks pretty much constantly. She also gets one bottle of toddler formula at night, but we are working on weaning her off of that. After that bottle is gone we will be off of milk completely. I don't want her to have cow's milk. I'd rather opt for healthier ways of getting the vitamins and fat content that she needs.

This, although DS got really constipated and so we switched to Almond milk. DS gets 16-20 oz a day. 1 cup in the AM, he drinks it with and the rest after his breakfast, the 2nd cup around 3 or 4ish an hr or 2 before dinner. Water sippy with other meals and rest of the day. It took a while for him to really take to drinking his sippy... at first I would put him in his high chair in front of his fav tv show so he would drink, I was so paranoid... but Dr. reassured if he is also getting cheese, yogurt etc he is getting what he needs. I stopped worrying, offered it and the water throughout the day and now he drinks just fine both milk sippy and water
