Infertility

Started meds!

This IVF thing is moving very fast!

On Wednesday, we had mock transfer, salinehysterosonogram, med class. Lo and behold, the doctor said we could start BCP that day and hopefully start stims around July 27th or so...estimated ER the week of August 6th. I'm a little nervous because it looks like I will be needing to take a 2 hour drive each way every morning for a week, but I can do anything for one week!

Even better news, FSH came back at 6.6 and AMH was 3.25. AFC was 11 on one side and 13 on the other. DH had a repeat SA and his counts were awesome (that man wants me to put a copy of his SA report on the fridge- like a child so proud of his art work!!). RE was very optimistic with these numbers and so, here we go! We paid up the entire amount for the shared risk program and applied for compassionate care for some of our med coverage. Otherwise, my nurse said that she would talk to me on Monday and I will just buy all of those. I am officially broke but never so excited in my life.

Now for the big question...how many embryos to transfer? My RE said that his practice prefers only transferring one, but DH really wants to try for twins, or at least transfer 2 and hope for at least one. Any thoughts?

I was so excited to see all of the BFPs! I hope everyone is having a great weekend!

Re: Started meds!

  • We would love to have you join us as an August Shooting Star! You will be amazed how fast your IVF cycle goes now that it is started.

As for how many embies to transfer: I think that is a very person specific decision, and very much based on diagnosis and what you feel you can handle (ie risks of twin pregnancy, financial implications).  Our clinic encourages eSETs for first time transfers with no anticipated embryo quality issues.  After a long talk with our RE (who is one of, if not the, most aggressive in the practice) as well as with each other, we have decided to transfer two.  If we are lucky enough to have both take and take home twins then we will be done and will donate our remaining embryos.  If not, we will have remaining embryos to either try for a successful pregnancy or a sibling.  Based on the info our RE gave us, transferring two does not significantly increased the success rate but does increase the twin rate to 30%.  A risk we are comfortable taking.

  • Thanks for the insight. I think we're going to try for 2. I'm comfortable taking the twin risk.

I've seen a lot of siggies with the fireflies, bugs, shooting stars....is that a way of showing which month you are having IVF?

Exactly!  There is a check-in twice a week which is basically an opportunity to update everyone on where your cycle is at, have questions answered and basically just get support from other people who are going through the same thing at the same time since IF is such a roller coaster.   I know the code to add the badge to your siggy was posted in the weekly check ins this last week.

Welcome to the Shooting Stars! I started my Lupron shots yesterday and I am hoping the shots go by fast!

As for embryo transfer, my RE is probably only transferring one for me because he said with my age, the two might definitely take and they don't aim to produce twins because of the high risk.

They also said that transferring two vs. one doesn't increase your chances of getting pregnancy much, just the increased chance of having multiples.

    Good luck

Eta: Here is the link to the shooting starts check-in from Thursday. The link to add the badge to your siggy is in there.
