Infertility

PCOS and moving straight to IVF

I have PCOS ("thin" PCOS) and don't seem to ovulate on my own.  Has anyone skipped IUIs and gone straight to IVF?  I had four rounds of clomid (see siggy) and I had no response whatsoever so it.  My RE gave me a choice of Follistim plus IUI or moving straight to IVF.  We chose the IUI, but before starting that cycle my husband and I agreed that IVF seemed like a better choice, since money is not an issue (great insurance) and it will give us the best shot at a BFP.  But now that IVF is seemingly our last ditch effort before we look into adoption, I'm hoping to hear that a lot of girls have had PCOS and good success with IVF.

Re: PCOS and moving straight to IVF

  • i have pcos and im in the middle of my first cycle, i never even did clomid because my DH has a low sperm count but honestly i was happy that we got to go straight to ivf because i feel like its less guess work, you know everything along the way, you know how many eggs got fertilized, you may get embryos to freeze so for all the effort i just thought it was a better option but thats just my opinion

    A couple of things:

-I'd check with your insurance to make sure you don't have to do X number of cycles before moving to IVF.

-I'd try one cycle of injects only because I'd want to see how I respond to them before jumping into IVF

i also have PCOS and I also have coverage for IVF through insurance. We have Aetna and they require you to do 3 cycles of IUI with injectable medication before they will approve IVF. I also had no response to Clomid. Luckily we ended up with a BFP on our 2nd round of injectables along with letrozole. So definitely check with the insurance company to find out what you need to do to get that coverage. Your doctor can write a letter to fight for IVF if you have any medical reasons why you won't conceive with IUI. Good luck to you!!

I have PCOS as well.  We tried metformin for 3 cycles and a round of just gonal-f with no success.  We are no in the process of our first IVF.  Our Dr recommended that we go right to the IVF with ICSI.  They did not believe that the IUI had a higher success rate for our situation, PCOS and low morphology.
  • If you are just dealing with PCOS and no MFI then I would definitely recommend doing at least 1 cycle of IUI with injects to gage how your body responds.  As anxious as we are all to get our take home baby, IVF is much more invasive and a lot more difficult both physically and mentally.

I also echo what PPs said about insurance requirements.  We have H.arvard P.ilgrim and they require 3 IUIs before moving on to IVF unless certain MFI cutoffs are met (as they were in our case so we only did 2 before getting approval for IVF).

It's hard, but be patient with the process Smile
