I am judging for the ridiculous quote trees in this thread - you know who you are
I have a good sized tattoo that started when I was 15. Although I probably should have put that $ in savings for when I lost my job at 36weeks pg when I was 30. DUH
My BBF uses WIC for her 2 youngest kids (out of her 6 total, 3 different fathers). She also drives an Escalade and has an iphone. Wanna know why? The WIC is for the 2 under 2 who are special needs, drug and alcohol exposed, foster children. Her next 2 are the older siblings of the 2 younger ones, also special needs but they've already finalized their adoption, the oldest 2 are her bio kids who were born at 32 & 34 weeks premie (which is why they pursued foster/adoption instead of another pregnancy). She has an iphone as a perk of her H's job and the used escalade was much cheaper than the minivan that she wanted. Feel free to judge away.
I hear you reallynervous - that is your opinion that the majority are lifers. I posted some stats that show that your opinion isn't really based on fact.
My last post on this thread, I promise (I think) but I must quote Stewart: "
"Why is it that if you take advantage of a corporate tax break you're a smart businessman, but if you take advantage of something so you don't go hungry, you're a moocher?"
I appreciate you posting stats, because I do realize that my opinion can be bias. I did takeaway from the stats that they were more about trafficking and not about people who stay on assistance just because they can. I'm really not sure how you would even go about conducting a study on that. But that is what I mean by "lifers", people who could find jobs etc. which would allow them to be self-supportive but don't do so.
I like your quote.
Thanks. I think that's part of my point too -- there is no data to back up your assertion that the majority are lifers, so why not give them the benefit of the doubt, instead of assuming they are gaming the system? Also, it's very hard (some would say impossible) to prove a negative (in my case, that the majority are not lifers). If you assert an opinion and want to say that the opinion could be fact, the burden is on you to prove it (just had to throw that in, lawyer to lawyer )
Dang it! Don't lawyer me :-). I agree it is hard to prove a negative. But really to back up your opinion it would be to prove that the majority of people on welfare are in need of assistance and working to become self-supportive. Really either of our opinions is hard to back up. Typically I give people the benefit of the doubt, and this is where my bias on this subject comes into play. Because the the group of society I dealt with (glad to be working civil now) and seeing them "game the system" it has made me wary of the whole welfare system in general. Obviously, my opinion, is not going to change how much I pay in my taxes.

Here are your damn statistics:
More than
half of SNAP recipients are children or the elderly. (I think the specific #s are 53% and 7%, respectively). Of working age individuals, 40% of beneficiaries live in a household with earnings.
So about 80% of SNAP recipients are either kids, old, or work.
The average length of time someone will be on food stamps is 7 moths,
and 2/3 are on stamps for less than a year. If you want to take it
further, TANF (welfare) recipients are limited to 2 years of payments before being required to
work 20 hours a week. Only disabled Americans can receive TANF payments
for more than 5 years in total.

Since I am "quote tree" person and I know it, how do you make it not so long? I tried to trim it down, but then it wouldn't let post. I'm on an IPad if that makes a difference.
My judgement had nothing to do with formula, diapers, WIC items (although, ironically, Cheerios is WIC approved ).
I judge moms who go out every weekend. I don't care if you are going out and it's 11:00 p.m. If your kid wakes up you should be there in the middle of the night. I'm not talking to moms that do this once in a while. But every weekend or even every other weekend. I judge.
Me too! Especially the ones who act like the world's greatest parent and complain about others who go out 'all the time' on FB, yet are the ones going out every other weekend when their kids are at their dad's house.
I've went out once since my son was born, and even then came home early because I missed him.
I didn't know becoming a parent meant your life was now over and God forbid you wanted to take up any outside interests.
I meant going out like drinking, bar hopping every single weekend your kids are gone and then posting your drunken escapades on FB. I can only think of one individual I know that does this every.single.weekend. her kids are gone.
Obviously this is what I meant as well. Every single weekend is ridiculous. If your kids aren't home that's one thing. I'm talking your kids are home and you get a sitter every weekend so you can go out. That's crazy. I have many high school friends on FB that continue to do this.

Not sure how easy/possible it is on an ipad but you can delete the embedded quotes, you just have to make sure you delete the "quote user=name" part for each too. But you keep the last one, or up to the one you want. Like with parentheses check that there are an equal number of quote user= at the beginning and /quote at the end.

ashcody specifically said she judges people who go out when their kids are not at home.
That is horseshiit. Absolute horseshiit. If your kids are not at home, there is absolutely no reason to be judged for going out until the wee hours, if you choose to do so.
If you took the day off of work, would you just go sit in your office/cube/whatever and stare off into space or would you actually do something fun?

Did she touch a nerve? I mean, Im a little jealous people actually party all night because I can barely make it past 10 pm, but you seem to be a little over the top in your response. Besides, why do you respond to these if you are going to get worked up?

I haven't stayed up past midnight in almost 3 years.
My kids stay at my parents house fairly frequently. I'm able to go out and have fun and if someone posts drunken pictures of me on FB, I find it offensive that I would be judged for being responsible in my adult life.
If the OP of that opinion doesn't like doing it herself, that's one thing. But to get all judgybitch on someone who has no immediate responsibilities reeks of simple jealousy on the OP's part.
This is hardly worked up for me. Trust. This is me annoyed and offended. Not worked up.

I've worked in criminal defense too and, yes, it does jade you, but I find it odd that you're equating "lifers" with gaming the system. If your criminal defense work was like mine you've seen firsthand how systemic poverty affects a person's entire life. Surely, you've watched your client's kid play in the courthouse and realized how difficult it will be for that kid to break the cycle he's stuck in. I mean I never had much insight into how my clients got their government money, but if they weren't charged with welfare fraud, I had no reason to believe they were cheating or something.
Along the lines of the above quote, there are rich, cheating a-holes and poor cheating a-holes and neither define all rich people or all poor people. Seems like we only use the poor ones to feel better about ourselves though.

Wow. DH and I have nice things, we also have an almost 300,000 dollar NICU bill for our newborn. So yeah. We're going to take whatever assistance we can.
Holy Cow! Please tell me that's not all out of pocket!
Feel free to judge my cart all you want.
I have my own garden and we hit up our awesome farmer's market every weekend where it's better quality and cheaper. So my grocery store cart is all the other stuff. IDGAF.
Exactly. We go to 3 different stores.
Same here...I get boxed foods like cereal...and yikes/gasp...crackers at Target or Wal-Mart and hit up Whole Foods or Sprouts for meat and produce...
Some govt assistance programs give vouchers to farmers markets, as well. Juuust sayin.
I judge the lady on the Houston news last night for leaving her infant in the car under a blanket for 30+ minutes while she ran an errand. It has hit over 100 several times here lately...
And I judge CPS for not removing the infant from her care.

Maybe one day she did have a job and fail on hard times. However, I hate asking for anything I would have sold something before asking for handouts. However, that is me.
Clearly there is no arguing with your stellar logic.
Your mercy and compassion reach deep.
I love how people who don't need assistance act like they know exactly how they'd handle it.
I have needed assistance and.sold things to get by.
I do believe it is not that easy. We are living a little tighter because of medical bills and car repairs and while I can sell stuff for now, that is a short term fix. I have used various swap sites on Facebook to pay groceries and toiletries, but that is a finite amount. That is just to hold us over until payday (9 days...but whose counting, haha). We couldn't live long term on that.
I love Cheerios and have two tattoos! Oh, and I'm a professional. I also think people who want to take away women's rights to do what they want with their own bodies are disgusting!

I judge people who give up their whole lives just because they popped out a kid and have no identity otherwise.
When I was in college, I worked two jobs, one at a grocery store as a cashier and as a bartender. Granted it was a small town, but I can not even tell you how many people came through my line, paid with food stamps, and then I later served them at the bar. And I am not talking about $1.50 wells, they drank top shelf and had tabs over $100. Did I judge? H*ll yes I did, as I worked two jobs and went to college!
Not trying to be snarky at all, but can I ask where your tattoos are? When you are conducting law or medicine or business, are they visible? Or do you cover them up?
I am the lady who judges tattoos and even made the comment I've don't really see professionals with tattoos. I have never seen my or my kids doctors with tattoos or colleagues tattoos (teacher profession) or anyone I've conducted professional business with having visible tattoos.
I judged the lady with a cart full of crap food, tattoos everywhere, screaming horrible things at her toddler in the grocery store while using a Food Stamps card. I am not against assistance at all, so it's not a post like that, but I was judging her cart of completely processed food (think pop tarts instead of Cheerios type of deal) but, I am a little crabby today anyway! Is it Friday yet?
My husband is covered in tattoos and I can guarantee you he is a better father than whatever piece of sh*t would marry you.
Way to keep it classy ....

Agree I tell DH all the time we should have a warehouse they can go to. We can give them food. I saw a lady in the store with LV shoes, purse, and wallet. Then used a gift card to buy beer. Yes I judge cart full of soda, chips, and junk.
A warehouse full of free healthy food? Sign me up!! That crap is expensive!!
