I just ordered an Ergo so I can put LO on my back when we go hiking (he's 1 yr/ 18 lbs). Will he be able to take a nap while I'm wearing him in it? Would I need to switch to a front carry for napping?
With my oldest two kids (9 and 6) I used the Baby Bjorn. They loved it! I have since given it away and was in the market for a new one. I did not do the "baby wear" but I used it all the time at the grocery store and when we would travel to a downtown area where strollers were not ideal. Both of my girls seemed to be nosey and loved looking around. If I put them in the carrier facing me they would squirm and not be happy at all. So when I realized the Ergo only allowed inward facing when carrying on the front I was quite disappointed. I have not decided if it's a deal breaker for me yet or not. I really love the white winter one they have come out with.
For me, it was an absolute necessity for DD. I honestly would have lost my mind otherwise. She would not sleep/nap if we put her down. During my maternity leave, it was the only way I could eat or get things done. DD would not tolerate the stroller, so it was also the only way I could take her out to stores or go for a walk with her as a newborn.
I have both the Moby and a Beco Gemini and adore them both.
To the PP who registered for the Bjorn because it was cheaper: you get what you pay for. It is well known that the bjorn is bad for baby's hips since it's a "crotch dangler". All of baby's weight is on it's crotch, whereas in the ergo, baby is evenly supported across it's legs, butt, back and thighs. I've heard many moms say that the ergo is easier on the carrier's back as well.
THIS! Please don't waste your money on a Bjorn. They are known to contribute to hip dysplasia and furthermore, there's no back/waist support for the parent wearing the child. My friend got one as a hand-me-down, and after a few weeks ditched it and bought an ergo.
i found that i loved my sling wraps so much more than i did my carrier. The bad thing is that I spent all that money on these items just to find that I really didn't use them that much with my first, but since this is my second baby, all of my friends swear by their carriers/wraps when you already have older children. They say it frees the hands more so that you can also concentrate and interact with a toddler much easier than trying to do it one-handed and balance a baby on the other hand. If it's your first then i would just wait and see after the baby is born if this is an item you would really use.
I became a pro at the Moby with my DD. She wanted to be held literally non-stop, so I started wearing her in the Moby to get anything done. Loved it. I still have it and plan to use it again this time.

I'm so glad you girls brought this up.
To the girl who registered for the Bjorn please read this because it's all very true. The Ergo is worth the price and often times you can find one at Marshalls or some equivalent store. Plus Zulily has them right now for a fabulous price. Spend the money!

Ditto this. The National Hip Dysplasia Foundation actually has info on carriers such as Bjorns. They are terrible both for baby and parent.
As for ring slings - Sleeping Baby Productions or Sakura Bloom linen are both highly recommended. SBP's are a lot cheaper (around $40-$70, depending on the fabric and tail choices you make) if you aren't sure you'll use it a lot.
