Catholic Baptism and Jewish Baby Naming

Can I have both for my little one? My DH and I want to expose our baby to both our religions and want to give her options for when she's old enough to decide.

  • Hi Quartermisses! Thanks for your reply!

Does anyone know anyone I could reach out to in the NYC area?

Have you talked with your own priest or rabbi?? If they aren't willing to do it, maybe they can recommend someone who can.

  • I was raised Catholic and my husband is Jewish.  Neither of us are that religious, however.  We might have a "blessing" for the baby.  It would be a way for us to introduce the baby and represent both religions. Honestly, I think it would be more for our families than us. I might be wrong, but I think having an actual baptism would show some commitment to that religion

  • i doubt you will find a catholic priest that is so accommodating to this idea.

Who were you looking to do the "blessing"? I'm in the same situation and looking to do a blessing ceremony but have no idea who would proceed over it.

You might having a harder time finding someone to do it if you are not active members in a church.

  • i'm in the same situation as you- i'm catholic and my husband is jewish; we married in the church, but we had a cantor officiate as well. the priest was very accommodating. my cousin had a baptism for his baby in a church and separately had the cantor do a baby naming ceremony at the restaurant/reception-- so they did both. let me know if you want the cantor's info-- he's based in long island. whereas the church will probably just say make a donation-- the cantor will probably ask for several hundred dollars...

I'm not sure.  My mother knows someone in a similiar situation and she is planning to get the details.  Since it's still pretty far away, I haven't given it much thought yet.

  • We are doing a briss and a baptism. There are many churches in the city that would do it. You just have to find one that is progressive. As for the jewish part, just go for a reformed temple. They have no problems with interfaith couples, especially if the mom is jewish.
  • The way most Catholics will look at is this...when you get married in the church they will do a marriage with a spouse of a different religion, but that spouse agree to raise the child Catholic. I think doing 2 different ceremonies would go against that thinking! However, the Catholic Church is getting much more lax on everything you might be able to find a priest somewhere. Good Luck! I personally think its a great idea, but being Catholic I can see the politics of it causing issues.
