1st Birthday Party Dilemma

I am having his first birthday party in the beginning of September.  I am having trouble deciding whether to have the party at my parents house or at a park/pavilion.  At my parents house, there is a pool, pool deck, screened in porch, fenced in backyard and we would have to rent tables and chairs.  At the pavilion, there is 9 picnic tables chained in position around a hexagon shaped pavilion.  There is a horseshoe pit, volleyball net, basketball, baseball and playground.  The problems that I am thinking about are what foods to have at the pavilion and how to set it up and keep it warm/cold...the weather for the pavilion...renting tables and chairs is almost twice as much as renting the pavilion...my parents house may be a little tight for 50+ people but their backyard will fit everyone.  Any opinions, ideas, experience in this is GREATLY appreciated.  TIA

Re: 1st Birthday Party Dilemma

  • Wow...50 people? I don't want to sound snarky but that will overwhelm lo!

I'd have it at the pavillion if that many people are invited. You could have hamburgers & hotdogs.

What's the weather like in August/September? Here it's hot as h3ll so no outdoor parties!

Eta: Party City sells these round disks that keep food warm (I'm sure other places do too but I've actually seen them there). You can keep drinks cold by having a few coolers of ice and just have canned sodas and lemonade.

Ya I know its a lot of people but its mostly family.  My mom's family is italian and there is a lot of them! haha  And we live around Pittsburgh, so September can bring anything, weather wise.  Thank you guys for your suggestions! :)

Gotcha...we have small families so I'm not used to being around more than 15 people at a party/get together..lol

I would go with your parents house for sure. No use having all the hassle of renting things and trying to keep food warm/hot, etc. You should be able to enjoy LOs First birthday!

I would do a 2 hour party at the park. The thing I like about doing the party somewhere other than a house is that you have an end time. I would not try to feed 50+ people a meal. Even if you do it at your parents, just do snack foods and have the party in the afternoon instead of a meal time. That way you don't need as many tables/chairs.

We are doing the party from 3-5. I'm doing a cookie buffet with milk and a bar with wine, beer and some bar apps: caprese skewers, prosciutto wrapped asparagus, pita chips and hummus, berries.

I would have it at your parents house, just because I'm partial to big fun family parties in back yards.

We have 68 people invited to DDs so, I feel your pain. Our families are huge, and we're close to both sides. We're having it at our house, we have a big tent for the backyard should it rain, and if its really hot people can cool off inside when they need too.

    All of this!

We did the same thing for DS1's Christening but had it catered. We will do the same for DS2's 1st birthday.
