DD was SUPER sleepy in the beginning. The pedi said that we did not have to wake her to eat after we confirmed she was gaining weight.
I do find that she tends to doze off too quickly (and then want to nurse again in 20-30 mins) if she is swaddled and very snug and warm. So I make sure she's just in a onesie or pjs (no blanket or swaddle) when I want/need her to get in a solid feeding session.
In the beginning I really struggled to keep LO awake on the breast for more than 2-3 min. I had to strip her down to her diaper for feeds until she was about 2 weeks old. Now she'll stay awake long enough to get what she needs. Her eyes roll back a little and a big gush of milk dribbles out of her mouth as she falls off the breast. Whenever I see this I know I am going to get a good sleep, or she is going to have a successful nap where I can actually get something done.
Re: does your LO wake up on their own to eat?
Probably for the first week and a half this was us, now I still need to prod her while eating sometimes, but its not nearly the challenge it was.
