Breastfeeding

1 week old wont eat from breast!

My little one won't eat from my breast.

At day 4 he had lost more than 10 percent of his weight so the pedi recommended we supplement with formula. Frustrated but understood because I was so engorged my breast were rock hard and I couldn't get anything out.

Working diligently I was able to clear clogged ducts and reduce the engorgement by day 6 finally able to try breast feeding again.

At first he refused to latch on. But after a feeding he was able to latch on good.
The problem is I don't think he's getting much out. He sucks and sucks but still acts frustrated. And at the beginnings he usually refuses to latch on so we still have to supplement with a bottle of bm or formula.

I can pump and get some out. And I can even hand express so I know I have milk.

What's the deal?!?

If you made it this far thanks for listening to my story. It's day 7 and I don't know how to get to EBF. Any advise would be appreciated!!

  • Definitely call a lactation consultant ASAP. She can help figure out what's going on, and probably correct baby's latch. It was a lifesaver for us.

    This.

I would also try to use a warm wash cloth on your breasts to help you get a letdown prior to letting baby latch on. IT sounds like you are having trouble getting a letdown when baby latches.  Also make sure that any bottles LO gets are being fed very slowly and making baby work to get the milk from a bottle.

All of this.  If the warm washcloth trick doesn't work, try hand expressing or pumping until you get a letdown. Then leave a drop of milk on your nipple to encourage baby to keep sucking.

Keep at it mama! You are doing great.  It will get easier soon!!

    Thanks ladies!
I've tried all and still plan to see an lc sometime. But today we have had 3 successful nursing sessions and no bottles! This feels amazing.
