Success after IF

Birth control after baby Q

Hi all!  Haven't introd here but I had my son Benjamin a little over a month ago after our first round of IVF was successful.  My postpartum appointment is coming up and I'm wondering what to do about birth control. My instinct is to say screw it.  TBH we didn't have a ton of sex pre-baby and with our fertility issues and a newborn what are the odds we would have an freebie?  I have PCOS but I'm 27 pounds below my pre-pregnancy weight right now and I'm really curious to see if the weight loss will affect my cycles (yet even when I was young and skinny I had crazy irregular cycles).

I'm breastfeeding (well EPing) and DH has lazy sperm (we had 2-7 million motile sperm for each of our 3 IUIs).  We want a second and wouldn't mind them close together but, you know, 2 under one would be a little nutty.  WDYT?

  • i would say: use condoms until you are ready for an "accident" to happen. there are many surprises after IF around.  then when you are ready for an accident, you can ditch the condoms and see what happens.

  • Congrats on your baby! There are several women on here with surprise BFPs after IF with different diagnosis. Mine are same as yours PCOS and MFI. DS was conceived on my first post partum cycle. So just make sure you are ready to get pregnant even if it
    seems unlikely.

Agreed. That way you can still see what your cycles do on their own if you want.

  • Welcome! Congratulations on your son, I remember reading your posts when I was lurking on the other IF/ttc boards.

I'm sort of in the same boat as you, I feel like it isn't worth the effort to use bc based on my history.

ETA: I went back to charting to avoid.

This is our plan, only we have to use BC due to my c section recovery. I'm not sure what we will do after the mandatory year wait, but it's really nice to not be thinking about TTC and counting cycle days.

I agree with this as well.

We never used anything and got pregnant with our son when my daughter (treatment baby) was 6 months old.  My husband has MFI and I have a whole list of crap wrong with me so we definitely never thought it would happen.  We were very, very happy about it though and welcomed the surprise but I say if you think you might feel overwhelmed then wrap it up ;)

  • If your ready for a surprise possibility I say just don't go on birth control. They say you can get pregnant after having a baby becuase your body could change but I am not one of those. I have PCOS as well and after having a baby nothing changed. Still no period even when I stopped bfding. Breastfeeding can alone keep your period from coming. I had to get on birthcontrol before I started my injects/iui cycle again so I would just wait. You never know! Congrats on baby Q!

    Married: 5/09 ~ TTC Since: 10/10 ~ PCOS ~ Progesterone from 10/10 - 2/11 ~ HSG on 3/18 - Clear ~ Started Metformin 1000mg & Clomid 50mg 2/11 ~ Metformin upped to 1500mg 4/6 ~ 6/7 Now going to SG and put on Clomid, Ovidrel, Gonal F, Prometrium, Estrace ~ IUI #1 7/2 = BFP!!!!!! March 6th our little man was born.

6/17/13 - Ovidrel, Follistim, Prometrium ~ IUI #1 7/2 = BFP! March 17th our St. Pattys day baby arrived

    10/29/17 - Started process for IVF, got pregnant & miscarried a 2nd time since summer. 2/22 started stims - Menopur, Gonal F, Cetrotide - retrieval 3/6 - , PIO, estrace 3xday - FET 4/18 = Beta 1: 616; Beta 2: 1342 = BFP

  • I declined bc. DD is almost 10 months and I don't have my cycle back yet. Honestly, part of the reason I never went on bc was because I would have been happy to have another when DD was 3 days old.
