BTDT BF Mommas- nursing bras

Hey there ladies. My search option is not really working, perhaps it's user error, but I looked at last 5 pages and didn't see this specific question. However, I apologize if it is a duplicate question.

This may be a dumb question...... I am a FTM and I am hoping to exclusively breast feed (God willing). How many nursing bras should I purchase?  I have zero right now and I want to be as prepared as possible.

 Thanks for your advice.

Re: BTDT BF Mommas- nursing bras

  • I would start off buying nursing tank tops.  It's hot in most places now so it will help until your milk comes in which will be a couple days after birth.  You will most likely waste money if you buy any this early as most women get engorged and grow a bit or a lot more after baby.  As for how many to buy...start with two or if you like the tank tops you can use them all the time but some women don't find them as supportive.  I would wait even longer, two to three months after birth, when your milk supply is established and try to get fitted again as things calm down a bit.

  • I guess it depends on how often you do laundry. I had 5 with DS and it worked for me. I didn't get anything great, just ones from Walmart. I didn't use nursing tanks either. When I went back to work at 8 weeks, I only wore nursing bras at home. I wore regular bras to work and still pumped.

  • I had 5.  I didn't buy any nursing tanks, and didn't like the nursing shirts really.  I lived in the nursing bras and zip up sweatshirts (DS#1 was born in October) for the first few months I felt like.

  • I would start with 2 or 3, until you figure out which brand or type you like. I recommend the Medela comfort bra to start. I also needed a sleep bra with my first. I am not a fan of nursing tanks, too exposing or me. I would rather pull my shirt up and have a little coverage.
  • Thanks for posting this! I almost forgot about getting nursing stuff!bras, tanks, ect. Yikes!

  • I had 4 sleep nursing bras and two daytime ones. I went back to regular bras at two months out or so because they fit under clothes much better and I could still nurse while wearing them. I hated the nursing tanks. They were all too short in the torso area

I had two sleep bras and three regular bras . That seemed like enough to me. I leaked the entire 14 months that I bf so I always needed nursing bras and nursing pads.

  • I ended up with 2 nursing tanks 2 nursing sleep bras and 3 regular nursing bras. I got them all from target and they were super comfy.
Your size will change so beware if you are buying bras. If you wanted to get a couple I would advise keeping the tags in until you are sure they will fit.

I preferred nursing tanks to bras

  • I lived in nursing tanks. It was hot the August DS was born and they were perfect. I would layer those cute cotton cardigans from old navy over them when it was cooler and winter and layer swingy cotton sleeveless vest things from forever 21 over them in the summer to cover the obvious nursing "snaps" on the straps.

I had 2 actual nursing bras and 2 sleep nursing bras. Though at night I would just lift up or pull down whatever tank or tee I was wearing.

  • FTM here but my sister who has two sons rec Bravado silk seamless nursing bras. They're a bit pricey but based on all the reviews on Amazon it seems to be the best. You can start off with 2 so you still have one while you wash the other, and then maybe go from there if you feel you need more.
  • Thanks for all your advice ladies!
  • I never used a nursing bra, and I BF for almost a year. I exclusively used the Target nursing tanks, and then further down the road I got lazy with even that and went to a regular bra that I would just pull down (paired usually with a t-shirt with a loose/wide v-neck).

Yup, I threw away all my other bras once I discovered the bravado.

I also recommend nursing tanks, especially for summertime.  Those I just bought cheap at target, with no regrets.

I did fine with two nursing bras plus two bravado nursing tanks. I don't think you will need more.
  • I loved nursing tanks in the beginning. I had 3, but 5 would've been better to get me to laundry day.

I had 2 sleep bras, also nice and pretty interchangeable w the tanks.

I had 3 nursing bras for when I needed something a bit more bra like. I also just used reg bras once DS got older, 6 or 7 mo or so.
