Rec convertible carseat

Can anyone recommend their convertible car seat? I will need two, one for our Kia Sorento (SUV), and one for a small Hyundai Accent (DS does not ride in this car much).

  • Check out car-seat.org or facebook group carseats for the littles - you will want to include size / age of child and your cars as you have.  You also want to look into how long you want to rear face - apa recommends until at least 2 several people including me have a goal of 4 years old.  That will greatly change the recommendations.

  • We have Evenflo Triumphs. We got them for DS and used it from 8 months until he was just over 3. Now DD is using it and they are still in great shape. They were top rated by Consumer Reports and fairly priced IMO (around $130). DS was RF until 2 and had plenty of leg room but it's not so huge that it won't fit in your car.

  • I rf till 3 or 4. However, my favorite is the Diono Radian. You just won't get that type of safety, rf limits, ect from a 150 or less seat. It's almost all metal. Weighs much more than the plastic cheap gracos and evenflos I used to have. I also have the Clek Foonf and it is the Rolls Royce of car seats. Amazing rf limits, crumple technology, and amazing features. Is Just a tread expensive, which is I recommend the radian for the biggest bang for your buck.

  • I second car seats for the Littles and the website. Also all seats must pass the same standards. Consumer reports only rates easy if use. They do not rate safety. The more expensive seats usually are easier to use, more padded, higher height or weight limits, special colors....

Yes, they all do pass the same tests. Some do the other car test that isn't mandatory though thats at higher speeds.

  • We have two Recaro ProRIDES. They work well in our Escape and F150.

  • I have seen a lot of STMs recommend the Diono Radian RXT for various reasons.  I am personally underwhelmed with the seat.  I don't like that you can't use the head wings with an infant and the recline is ridiculous.  Even with the angle adjuster it takes up A LOT of room.
When I looked at the options we went with Britax Advocate(s). Mainly because it offers the most side impact protection you can get on the market today, and Beb rides in the outboard seating position in my car.  We currently have one installed in our Toyota Corolla and one in out Mazda CX-9.  It fits great.  And IMO you cannot go wrong with Britax. andplusalso, they are currently having huge sales.

There's some really good info here.

The problem with Britax is that they have some of the smallest seat shells. Which means they cannot RF as long as needed. Which is why STM's go for the Diono's of the Foonf's. Since they have the amazing safety features (like crumple zones or almost all steel). They also have some of the biggest seat shells and weight limits.

  • I have the maxi cosi pria 70. I really like it. The material is really nice, super plush and doesn't get too hot in the sun. The babe seems to like it too. She often falls asleep, so it must be comfortable. It was also really easy to install using latch. I have a vw jetta sportwagon. It has one of the best reclines for smaller vehicles. Plenty of leg room for the passengers up front.

It can be used rf until 40 lbs or 40 inches so depending on your LO, for a pretty long time.

We have a variety of seats.  Our main ones right now are the Diono Radian R100s.  The main reason for those are that we have 3 seats across in our CRV and Radians can fit 3 across.  I went with the R100s instead of the R120 or RXT because my kids are small - DS is 4 and 33 lbs, and DD is 3 and 27lbs.  There is NO WAY they will still be in high backed booster seats when they are >100 lbs.  That would probably be into middle school by then.  I also didn't need the infant support pillows, etc, since the baby is still in the infant carrier.  And the R100 is cheaper.  It is a heavy seat, but I like that it seems safer that way.  The kids seem to like them - but they don't seem to care what seat they are sitting in!

We also had the Britax Marathon, which is now in DH's car.  We have an Evenflo Titan, also in DH's car.  Like the Marathon, HATE the Titan - it just feels cheap, straps get twisted, etc.  The Marathon is substantial, but it takes up a lot of room - would not have worked for my 3 kids.  DH only has those 2 seats, so he can only take 2 kids with him.

Like I said, it wasn't for me.  My 10 month old weights 17 lbs wears 6 month clothes with room to grow.  I am not concerned with a shorter shell and 5 lb RFig weight difference.

Don't recommend car seats that only work for you. I've seen some of your posts and you could really benefit from learning more. Again, Britax works great for you because your lo is in the lower percentile, but most kids aren't and I would never advise another parent to spend so much money on a seat they may only be able to use a year or two.

OP, add the Graco MySize (etc) on your list.

Exactly. The problem is that Britax is about 5 years behind the Mark on their seats. I spent hours researching the great seats out there and it's so important fir your child to be rf as long as possible. Also, whose to say your small child will stay small. Lots of kids shoot up in toddlerhood. Then your stuck turning your child too soon since you sank a few hundred into a small shelled seat.

LOL, read that last sentence of what I wrote.   How can you say that Britax seat will only work for me?  Britax has some of the best selling seats and is/has been the American standard for safety and in my opinion their seats are worth every penny.   Everything I wrote was my personal opinion and I stated that.  I also stated mt reasoning and OP can make her decision based on her own reasoning.  I looked at all my options and did what's best for me, my cars and my budget.

You opinion, budget and needs differ from mine.  It doesn't make me wrong recommending an excellent seat.

All we are trying to do is educate you. Both of us spent a lot of time researching car seats and are very passionate about car seat safety and proper car seat use. Britax used to be the best in the market. The key there is used to be. Until they start making taller shelled seats car seat nerds everywhere will try to educate people that britax no longer makes seats to last new reccomendations.
