My planned homebirth with a midwife turned into an unassisted homebirth! Yesterday at 3:15pm, June 30th, baby Ian Matthew arrived safely into his fathers hands. He weighs 8lbs 2.5 oz, and is doing awesome.
On Saturday I had irregular contractions for about 10 hours, starting at around 4pm. Contractions never got intense, and would vary from 15 minuted to 2 minutes apart, but would not get much longer than 30-45 seconds. I talked about it with my midwife, and she thought it was still early labor and to call when they were a minute long. Well contractions completely fizzled out by 2-3 in the morning and I went to sleep. In the morning it was pretty much nothing, but maybe a contraction here or there, but not more than 3 in an hour. I lazed around and napped all morning. Around 1:30 I got a few stronger contractions, about a minute long, but they were still 10 minutes apart. DD was napping at this point and I was laying down watching a movie. I decided to get up and sit on the exercise ball, and it was around 2:30, and I had one very intense and long contraction. So I called for DH to come in and suddenly contractions ramped up and became super intense, by 3pm I told DH to call the midwife and tell her to come. At this point things got crazy, DD wakes up from her nap, I have DH filling the jacuzzi tub, and I hopped in the shower. DH calls the midwife to come (who lives 45 minutes away, I thought I had plenty of time still), and with the next contraction I felt the urge to push. My poor DH, he is running back and forth from our bedroom to the bathroom, getting DD situated with a cartoon on the TV, and I am yelling at him that I have to push. He comes back in and at this point there was no stopping this boy from coming, and I got on my hands and knees in the shower and he popped out in 2 big pushes. DH was a rock star, and just kept telling me, you are doing fine, I got him, I got him. Well baby Ian came out screaming and perfectly healthy. I sat down in the shower and cuddled him to my chest while DH turned off the shower and got a dry towel to cover us with. He called our midwife to tell her the baby came, and she instructed him to do exactly what we already had done. The midwife got to our house about 30 minutes later, and at this point I had already moved myself back to our bed, baby Ian had already nursed, and I had delivered the placenta. The midwife checked her phone, and saw we called her at 3:17 to tell her the baby was born, so we figured his time of birth was 3:15. The midwife checked us all out and did her usual postpartum exams and routines, and we are all doing fine, except we are a little in shock at how quickly things accelerated. I never imagined that my midwife would miss the birth, but baby Ian decided he had to make his exit in a hurry.
My labor with Ian was completely different than my labor with DD. With her my labor started with my water breaking, and it was a fairly quick labor, about 5 hours. With Ian my water didn't break until I was pushing, and the starting and stopping of contractions just completely through me for a loop. I pretty much went from mild contractions to oh shiit in 30 minutes.
Well it is officially July and I am so excited to see all the rest of the July Mommies have their babies this month! Can't wait to hear about your LOs. Here's to healthy babies and happy pushing.
Here is a pic of the little guy with DD:
