Bridesmaid Dress

I am in my SIL's wedding at the end of September and the Bridesmaid Dress I ordered 5 months ago already it too right in the chest. The dress is very flowy at the bottom but the lining underneath is not. The shop will not return it and said its too late to order a new one. They can alter it and the fabric is 40 a yard! I will do whatever I need to. This is my first pregnancy so I don't even know how big I will be at 6 months. Has anyone dealt with this in the past that may be able to give me advice?

Re: Bridesmaid Dress

  • Can you wait till August to alter it? But maybe buy the extra fabric now just in case? Everyone grows so different it's hard to estimate how big you'll be!

  • See if you can find a seamstress NOT associated with a bridal shop - you'll get a better deal and they may have ideas outside of ordering the extra fabric.  And yes, wait until closer to really get it altered.

The other advice - plan for swollen feet when it comes to shoes.  I was about 7 mo pregnant in best friends wedding and ended up having to wear flip flops.  She didn't care but I was sad!

    EDIT - bad spelling

  • I was supposed to be in a wedding in September [got moved to March 2014], and the dress shop told me they'd try to put in a corset back. Not sure how the crap that would have worked though.

I agree on trying to find a different seamstress that isn't affiliated with a bridal shop. When I thought the wedding was going to be in September, the bridal shop wanted almost $100 for the alteration [and more if they had to add fabric]. Outside shops wanted less and had other ideas.

  • I am in the same boat with you. I am the maid of honor in a wedding end of august and I'll be 19 weeks then. I talked to a seamstress and she wants me to come in end of July, she said it would be enough time. She also said the dress's that we have ordered actually have extra fabric in the tummy area so it will be easier for her to just undo that seam and sew it back up. I am starting to worry about the top fitting tight though. . . .

Good Luck and let me know how it turns out. . ..

  • I don't know much about dress making but is there away you can put elastic in the the under part? Around the belly and stuff? Then at the bottom have the under skirt part so it's not just showing the elastic? I'm not sure how to do that though but just a thought.
  • I also agree with finding a seamstress not associated with the store. They may have a way to alter it by letting the seams out instead of piecing the dress together with extra fabric.

  • And also, I found my seamstress on our local theknot board, so thats a great resource too.  I used her for my wedding dress in 2006, then again for the bridesmaid dress in 2008.

  • When I got married, I had two bridesmaids that were pregnant.  I knew one of them was ahead of time and so I picked a dress with an empire waist and it did pretty well.  The second one found out later and it turns out the dress she bought did not fit.  She ended up doing some online sleuthing and found someone selling the same dress (used) online.  That person had put a corset type thing in the back so it could be laced up and tightened or loosened as needed.  Worked like a dream!

  • I actually was pregnant in my own wedding. The dress I had was altered to my non pregnant body. It ended up fitting, barely , only thanks to the corset backing. So if you can get that put on it it will save you!

  • I would definitely call around or check online for other stores that can order you a new one in time. For a September wedding, June should be plenty of time to place an order.

And yes, a good seamstress should be able to help if there is enough fabric.
