Question to those who have experienced SCH

Hi all -

Curious.. I know this possibly varies from person to person & there are variables including location & size of the SCH, but was wondering what your past experiences were.

Is an SCH something where I could expect to see bleeding/spotting off & on for the rest of the pregnancy? Or is it more normal for it to just happen, then heal up & you don't expect to see much more from it?

It was found that I had 9.3cm hematoma a little over 2 weeks ago. (Sat 06/15 I was in ER when bleeding seemed heavy & sudden)  It is luckily on the opposite side from the placenta. By the following Friday, the spotting that had turned brown, had pretty much stopped.  The following Wednesday (06/19) it started back up again... a little heavier than spotting, but all & all still brown.  It has been up & down between spotting & a little heavier between Wed & today. All still brown.

I'm calling my OB this morning, but was curious your past experiences. Wondering if this is something I may just have to be watchful for for the next 6 mo or so. (If so, it's gona be a LONG 6 mo of stress!)

Re: Question to those who have experienced SCH

  • I was told you could bleed multiple times from it so I wouldn't be too alarmed. (though I would talk to your dr about it.)  I think the general rule of thumb is that it SHOULD have either bled out of cleared up by week 18 if not sooner. It shouldn't still be there during late pregnancy. I hope it clears up soon for you and the bleeding stops.

I've bled once because of mine and I should find out today at my u/s if it is still there. I think it probably is because it really wasn't that much blood.  But I'd love for him to tell me its gone!!!

  • I second what cara said. Both my OB and RE said the clear up by week 18 and can bleed intermittently. The location and size can be an indicator of bleeding but not necessarily. I had one that after it ruptured right near babies legs was about 4 and that one bled alot. Then I had another that at the biggest measured 17.8 and never bled at all just reabsored. It is perfectly reasonable to check with your OB when there is bleeding but with SCH it is usually expected. I still went in for an u/s whenever it happened because it scared me so much.

I have my first bleed around 6 wks and then had subsequent large bleeds in week 7 and 8. Between then I have spotted to thisdY. My SCH was 2 cm right near my cervix which dr said was good. I go back Wed for my 4th ultrasound first with OB and prAy all is well with LO and SCH is disappearing.
  • Thanks all for your info / past experiences.

I'll be going in for the usual doppler check for heartbeat today, per Nurse suggestion. .

  • I had a "large" SCH with DD when she was 14 weeks. I was at work as a nurse in the hospital, bent over to pick something up and bled. Ran to the bathroom and sat on the toilet and it sounded like I was peeing but it was just blood. Sorry if TMI. Went to OB triage in the hospital which was luckily just a floor below me and got checked out. DD was alive and kicking! Since my SCH was near to my cervix, I had red blood for a week and brown blood for another 4ish weeks. I was on "no sex" pelvic rest until the bleeding stopped. My OB told me that if I had my SCH earlier, it could have compromised DD's blood flow because the bleed was so big and the placenta would have been less mature and could have torn away from the wall. He also said I had a chance of premature labor if the bleed didn't stop. Thankfully nine of those things happened and DD arrived healthy at 37.5 weeks! SCH are scary but remember that a whole lot of them end up good like mine! But also remember that usually just the horror stories get posted online!

So, as far as I understand, you could have spotting but that could be due to the location. Mine was near the cervix, so the whole clot came out instead of being reabsorbed. Good luck and prayers going to you!
  • I have experienced this once before and have one now. The first time I had a sch I also ended up miscarrying due to a blighted ovum. The first time I just spotted pink and red for a week and then it stopped. I found out I was pregnant again in early may. Mid June at 10 weeks I went to the ER for spotting. We told I had a sch but it was very small. I am now 13 weeks and the spotting only lasted two days and then completely stopped. If you feel concerned go to your obgyn and make sure it's getting smaller. My obgyns wife had a huge one and bled for four months and had a healthy baby. I really think you are going to be fine.
