I just got off the phone with my mom who informed me that my dad has progressed into secondary progressive multiple sclerosis.
He is being put on disability.
I don't really know for sure what this will mean for he and my mom just yet. Their house is not accessible. So we will probably be working toward making that happen.
So sorry to hear this! It's so hard to watch the people that took care of you when you were little start to need you more and more. My grandfather is like a father to me, and he went blind suddenly about 9 years ago... it was so hard. Watching him change because of the anger/mourning was also hard, but his disability has become a way of life now, and he's back to his old self I'm happy to say.
Your dad is so glad to have a daughter that is willing to help make things easier around the house. Hopefully you will be able to modify their house and they won't have to move.
DH has an uncle with MS that went on disability about 25 years ago. His condition stabilized and hasn't really gotten any worse in the last 10 years or so. He cannot walk, but uses a scooter, and is able to get himself around the house and still enjoys his independence! Aunt and Uncle even go camping in an RV! I hope your dad is able to find some new joys in life to replace the career he is losing.

I am so sorry for you and your family. My dad has ALS, so I know the physical and emotional toll these kinds of disabilities can have on a family. Sending you lots of thoughts and prayers and please feel free to PM me if there is anything you need.

Just wanted to give you hugs too! So sorry to hear your dad has ALS.
Thanks everyone. I think the initial shock is wearing off. Mom and I have derived a plan to put an elevator in their house and it fixes all their problems with accessibility when he needs it.
Now just to put my therapy skills into effect on my dad and get him as strengthened as possible to put off the inevitable for as long as possible.
