I like the Playtex lil grippers one. You want to do a straw sippy since that's what they should be on at 1 year and won't hurt their teeth. I like the little Playtex ones cuz they work well and have a little part to squeeze to help them learn how to use a straw.
Another option is to skip sippies and go with a Doidy cup. We're doing this with our son so we can skip the sippy stage.

Same here with the playtex lil grippers. It only took her about 3 tries to get water out by herself, and she was just shy of 6 months old at that time. She's also working on the munchkin click lock flip straws... can't *quite* get anything out yet, but I can see the water going 75% of the way up the straw.

I have just discovered the Avent sippy cup with handles and a silicon spout. My LO loves it. The nice thing is that it comes with a spout cover which is great when we're on the go.

DD really likes the Tommy Tippie ones with handles on both sides
