How much food?

I have been following 5 month old DDs lead so far but in worried we are doing too much food. She seems to want to eat cereal 3x per day now. I've been doing 1/4 cup rice cereal for breakfast, 1/4 cup for lunch, and 1/4 cup cereal with a 2 tbsp of veggies for dinner. She doesn't always finish every bit, especially at dinner. I breastfeed one side, offer the cereal/veggie, then offer the other side. She still takes both sides breastfeeding! She breast feeds 23 other times during the day as well. I jut can't believe how much she's eating. Should I cut back on the cereal or keep it up? I don't want her to take in less milk than she needs by eating too much solids....

I can only share what my pedi told me, and that is that DS should only get 2-3 tablespoons of purees or cereal a day, and that's if he even showed any interest in it. If your DD is eating the same amount of breast milk (though if you EBF that is probably hard to tell) that she was prior to solids, I would think things are fine. My pedi just made sure I knew that food should not replace formula for DS right now.

Oh wow. I think she's getting way too much then! I started out the first few weeks with much less and only introduced veggies this week. But you are right my problem is that I EBF and can't really tell exactly how much she's getting. Maybe I'll go easy on the cereal until our next appt in a few weeks. Thanks!

I was always told that food before one is just for fun.  I would always BF then about an hour later offered solids.  At 6m I only did dinner and did not change anything with BF.

I was also told that I should work up to three meals per day between 9-12m.

Ditto, especially the bolded. We did 1 meal at 6 months, 2 at 7 or 8, and 3 around 9 months. BM is the most important thing right now, not solids so always offer it first. 3/4 cup rice cereal sounds like a ton, especially because it can cause major constipation.

Very helpful! Thank you! We are going to scale back a LOT on the cereal lol. I needed this input and really appreciate it!

My ped said we could start on cereal at the 4 month visit but not to give more than 1 meal a day before 9 months because he needs to not have solids start to replace breastmilk before then, then between then and 12 months it's a slow transition to solids making the bulk of his diet. This jives with what my old pediatrician said with the girls and what I've been able to find reading up on my own. He was seeming like he really needed foods last week and most of this week, but we're waiting a little while longer before starting and not rushing it.

My LO is 6months and he eats 3 meals per day. He is very healthy and has reduced formula from 32 oz per day to about 20. His pediatrician said it was fine as long as I feed him a balanced diet. My dad, who is a pediatrician, says the same. I know how important milk is, but cannot stand to see him hungry, whig he is until he eats his solids. He eats al kinds of fruits and veggies, as well as beef, turkey, chicken.
I just want to give a different perspective :
