pumping before going back to work

Anyone who has had to do this have advice how to manage it? I go back to work in August and need to have some milk frozen for dcp. With a 4 month old who is constantly on the boob and a 2 1/2 yr old who also needs attention, when am I supposed to find the time to build a stash?

Re: pumping before going back to work

  • You'll probably get the largest amount of milk for your time if you pump in the morning. Can you do as pp suggested and pump while your older LO is eating breakfast?

  • I'm just worried since I only average 34 oz when I pump, less after I've nursed him. I'll only be pumping twice during the workday so I will need to get a little ahead.

  • I pumped every morning after DS first feeding since my boobs were so engorged, then twice at work and then again after the final feed (so the kids should be in bed, for me it was usually 9pm). I would just feed on demand at night. Before going back you just have to make the time, what time does the toddler wake up? I would make sure to pump before that so you have one session done without issues, then I am not sure what your toddler nap is but that would be another one maybe after an afternoon feed, then after the toddler goes to bed and you have your final feed before bed.

Drink a boat load of water and good luck :-)

  • During my maternity leave, I pumped once after the first feeding of the morning and once at my bedtime around 10, after the baby was in bed.

I started the first session at three weeks and the second at 2 months. Built up quite a stash. I would start now if you can.

  • Well, I can tell you what NOT to do! I pumped one hour after DS2's first feeding. I went back to work with 400+ oz in the freezer. AND major over supply issues. Do NOT do this. 3 to 4 ounces is GREAT! Remember, this is extra, so you shouldn't be pumping a ton. I would stick to what you're doing because like PP's mentioned, a huge freezer supply is overrated.

I pumped in the AM around 8 and in the PM around 3 when I was on materity leave.  I dropped the PM pump because I was creating an oversupply.   I am so happy I have a freezer stash though because I don't always pump enough at work to keep up with LOs demands and would prefer not to supplement with formula.  Also, my daycare take my frozen milk so I send one fresh bottle and she uses the rest frozen so I don't need to prep bottles every day.  It also helps to go through the older milk.
