I know this is your opinion but it sounds kind of rude to be on the UO board. I thought this was just where you openly post an unpopular opinion without giving people the opportunity to "flame" or judge...

You'd be wrong about that. People are free to post whatever they want. Yay for America.
Oh geeze, I know that in America people are allowed the freedom of speech. I was just saying that the point of the "UO posts" is that you can say your opinion without people judging or responding negatively. However, we've already all agreed that omitting those types if comments is super boring.
So technically I was not wrong about the "rules" of this type of post.
Where did you get this incorrect information?! There is no protection in ANY thread. This is a public forum and people are allowed to react and voice their opinions as they please (as long as their response does not violate TB TOS).
You are indeed incorrect about the "rules" of this type of post.

And what I'M saying is that no, it's not the point. And anyway, nowhere does it say "Flame-Free." Even on "Flame Free Friday Confession" people are allowed to flame away if they so choose.

Honest truth: I googled what UO meant the first time I saw it and that's what my search results said.
So you didn't bother to read the deposition - so you've made your judgement without knowing? COOL.
Again, I don't feel bad for the racial apologists & am offended by it.
Well, I did read the deposition, and here's what it said. When asked, UNDER OATH, if she had EVER used the n-word, Paula Deen said yes, of course. Now, she could have lied and said, "why no sir, I would never use such a horrible word." That would have been lying under oath, but I bet she wouldn't have gotten fired over it.
Instead, she told the truth. In the past, she's used the word. The one time she could remeber was when telling her husband about a black man who held her at gunpoint while robbing the bank she worked in. As she put it, she wasn't feeling very charitable towards the man at the time.
She also then clarified that it was a long time ago, and times have changed. And I quote, "Things have changed since the '60s in the south. And my children and my brother object to that word being used in any cruel or mean behavior. As well as I do." So, basically, she said yes, she used to use it. But now she recognizes it is cruel and mean, and she doesn't say it anymore.
How is this worthy of her losing her job and being villified by every cable news channel and newspaper? Times change, and people change with them. She's done that. She doesn't use the word regularly, she wasn't caught on tape using it last week. She admitted she used it in the past but not anymore. End of story. Personally, I'm pretty happy that instead of being PC, she chose to tell the truth under oath. Something our former (and great) President Clinton wasn't always able to do. But hey, he just lied about cheating on his wife and using his position to get sex. No big deal, right?
First off, people HATED Clinton. It took YEARS for people to like him again. Second, why does everybody think she only said it once in like 30 years. The "yes, of course" would lead me to believe that she said it more than once and then when she gave all the crap excuses that she did about how she's old, etc. that just proved the point. Also, let me just tell you that the character assassination that is happening isn't unfounded. I know this from personal experience.
When someone has one or two posts to their name and posts on this board about a great deal or looking for local moms I get suspicious. If you have never introduced yourself or posted before until you post about a great deal I start to think You are trying to sell something you own or in the case of looking for local moms you might be a creeper.
omg I totally thought this too when there was the post yesterday for SF/bay area moms, & it was the person's first post. It creeped me out! So when I answered I was super vague, in case they were a creeper.

The purpose of UO Thursday is to stir the pot. In most cases we can argue some and still respect each other. The exception being when someone says something ignorant or inflaming making a complete arse of themselves. Ex: Hercules saying she wished someone would get horse kicked in the ute and become infertile.

How is it rude? OP said her grandparents used the n-word, but it was OK because they were really nice people. I disagree. Strongly. Anyway, you thought wrong, this is not just a chance to give your opinion and not hear anything back. When does that ever happen in the world?
I just got home from a playground build (I will likely post an AW thread about it later.. It was very emotional and I cried multiple times. Damn hormones) and do not have the energy to read all these long threads.. Will there be a bump evening news update this evening?!!

I feel bad for Paula Deen.
It doesn't excuse her actions, but you'd be hard pressed to find an older lady from the south that hasn't used that word before. My grandparents and great grandma never say it with malice, but they still use it occasionally. Us grand kids always respond with "OMG you can't say that" and they'll apologize and probably say it again a couple weeks later. Does it make them sound ignorant? Of course. Does it make them terrible people that should be burned at the stake? Absolutely not.
Shes innocent until proven guilty. So according to her deposition, referencing the word in conversations with her husband isn't worthy of her being crucified. Let her and her former manager hash it out in court. If you want to drop her from your company fine, but I'm sick of hearing the same two "incidents" repeatedly on the news. There's plenty to talk about.
So if your grandparents say it, they are also racists and horrible people IMO. They should know better by now. You have corrected them, they are probably not stupid and know for a fact that it's a derogatory, hurtful statement, yet they continue to say it.
I would agree that use of the word makes you a horrible person if by using the word your only possible intention was to be malicious, however that's not the case. People use the word everyday in music, television, and conversations with each other on the sidewalk.
If it is used to belittle somebody than yes you're a shiit bag. If its used to just describe a person like I hear quite often "oh yeah I know him, that's my n so and so" then it's inappropriate and ignorant. It's a terrible word that I would never use. Period. But that doesn't make somebody a horrible person for saying it.
I despise the use of the word, no matter who uses it, but let's not pretend that the context is the same.
You don't have to like it, but African American people using the word in songs, movies, etc. is NOT the same as your old Southern grandparents using it. Please don't act like you think it is. Nobody is that dumb. The n-word is ALWAYS used to belittle somebody when used by somebody of a different race. It's never a nice, harmless thing.
I know this is your opinion but it sounds kind of rude to be on the UO board. I thought this was just where you openly post an unpopular opinion without giving people the opportunity to "flame" or judge...

I agree. That's why my post had ways in which context could differ.
I understood the intent of your post. I'm sure your Grands aren't horrible, mean and malicious people, but unless they're saying "that's my n-ga" then the two shouldn't be compared.
Example: my grandma has said "I'm going to buy some collards from the N on the side of the road."
Example: my husbands fiend from school telling him "yeah, my sister used to date that N."
These to me are the same thing.
ETA this is way removed from my original post, which was the Paula Deen crucification is gettin out of control. Especially since at the moment it's he said she said until they hash it out in court.
I get it, based on those examples, you truly beleive there's no difference, so this is where the conversation is going to end for me...there's no point.

Disagree. Different parts of the country view the slaves differently. Diffent parts of the country view the n word differently. Older people were raised one way. Negro was the correct term to call a black person just fifty years ago... It was listed on a birth certificate. So, no, it doesn't make someone ignorant.
And if that was the word we were talking about, maybe you would have a point.

Um, from what I remember, the Republicans hated Clinton. Some Democrats were less than pleased with him. But whether he was liked or not was not my point. My point was that as President of the United States, he lied under oath, and DID NOT LOSE HIS JOB. And when the Republicans tried to fire him (i.e., impeach him), most major news outlets thought it was ridiculous and politcally motivated. On the other hand, we have Paula Deen admitting to something that probably the majority of people from her generation and from her area of the country would have to admit to, and she's being fired left and right and treated like a pariah. I don't know, I'd rather have someone who's admitted wrong doing and not lied under oath than the other way around.
And sure, maybe she's not a nice person, which you seem to imply from "personal experience." Maybe she is a racist bigot who discriminates against anyone who doesn't look like her. Last I checked, there's a lawsuit about this very thing and you are innocent until proven guilty. But a comment saying that she used to use a word and now doesn't isn't enough to prove her guilty in my mind. And I am not willing to say she's a horrible person because at some point, she used a word we all now find offensive. Give me a tape of her saying it in the last 20 years, and I'll change my mind. But until then, she's a human who made a mistake, told the truth about it, apologized for it, and is having her livelihood destroyed because of it. Not something I am proud of the country for at the moment.
Am I saying she did nothing wrong? Obviously not - like I said, she made a mistake. But I've definitely called someone ret-rded before. Do I say it now? Of course not. Did I say it when I was 10, and society thought it was ok? Sure I did. Am I now a horrible person for the rest of my life? I'd like to think no. Maybe you'd disagree with me on that.
On the topic of Paula Deen, not focusing on the recent events, I wonder if certain organizations were already looking to distance themselves from her after her affiliation with Novo and what I would assume to be a change in what she advocates/cooking style since she was diagnosed with a disease that is somewhat affiliated with her cooking style and lifestyle choices. I would think the dual messaging she suddenly had to spout could have been a PR nightmare for some of her affiliates.

also, Clinton was impeached. So, yeah it was a big deal.
Being employed at-will or by contract is vastly different than being elected to the highest form of office.
I really don't get the sads for Paul Deen. I'm pretty sure she isn't going to be totally desolate after being held accountable for her actions. The deposition was not just about the use of the n word one time, it was about other allegations of harassment & racism, as well.
Yes, the Republican controlled House of Representatives voted to impeach him. And the rest of the country, from what I remember, thought it was ridiculous. And the Senate did not vote to bring charges so he kept his job. Meanwhile, she didn't lie, and she's getting fired. I think it's a sad statement in our country that someone can lie under oath and people think it's not that big a deal (as evidenced by the fact people thought the impeachment was only politcally motivated).
As for the comments about the deposition, I completely agree with you there. The deposition included a lot of other comments that are WAY more worrisome to me than her past-tense use of the n-word. And if it were me writing these articles, that's what I would be focusing on. But instead, everyone is focusing on her use of the n-word, which I think misses the bigger picture. Let's be pissed about the real issues, and not whether someone said something offensive 30 years ago.
So you didn't bother to read the deposition - so you've made your judgement without knowing? COOL.

Yeah, I get it, still not cool, but I get it. But this is the one time she remembers saying the N word. How about her recently wanting to have her family members wedding ?old south style? complete with an all African American wait staff in white jackets dressed as house slaves?that?s not the N word but it?s still pretty racist!
I also dislike that Paula Dean used the fact that she is from the south as an excuse. I know plenty of people from the south who would never say that word and you are just feeding into a stereotype that is completely untrue.
The fact that this is even a debate is just asinine. I was raised by my grandparents who had some very non-PC views on race but still I grew up having never said the N word one time and marrying someone outside of my race. So no it?s not how you were raised it about having basic common sense to know when things are wrong or not.
Poor white Southern women, they're so put upon in post racial America.
I find this offensive.
Oh.
Sorry not sorry I don't feel bad for Paula Deen or the other racial apologists in this thread. I don't care when or how you were raised, being raised in "the south" is not an excuse to throw racial slurs around.
Damn skippy. And I was raised in the deep deep South. Doesn't offend me in the slightest, since I a) understand sarcasm and appreciate it immensely and b) know that I'm the farthest thing from the stereotype so no need to worry you were talking about me! Preach on, Gwinny!
I feel bad for Paula Deen.

Im glad you agree they are the same thing.
I can't believe you think that since a black man said the latter example society would crucify him the same they would a white person. You think he would be considered a racist?
Is your husband's friend black? If so, that would change my opinion about that statement. Those two statements said by white people, like you made them out to be, are both racist and unacceptable. You don't have to like it and I don't agree with it, but it's socially acceptable for black people to say the n-word. So, if you wanted honest opinions on those two statements you needed to put all the info, instead of trying to "trick" people into agreeing with you.
I know this is your opinion but it sounds kind of rude to be on the UO board. I thought this was just where you openly post an unpopular opinion without giving people the opportunity to "flame" or judge...
Mobile edit: this is in reference to Kate's post about the grandparents... Tried to reply to that specific post but for some reason it isn't showing up that way.
How is it rude? OP said her grandparents used the n-word, but it was OK because they were really nice people. I disagree. Strongly. Anyway, you thought wrong, this is not just a chance to give your opinion and not hear anything back. When does that ever happen in the world?
That's not what I said...
Go read your OP...that's exactly what was said. You said they used the word all the time, but they were old and really nice people anyway. Your attitude told the whole thing was that it was OK.
This. Not to mention, it's 2013. I don't care how you were raised. You aren't living under a rock. If it's considered an insulting term to an entire race of people, you stop using the word. It's not that complicated of a concept to understand and it's not that difficult to stop using that word.
A friend of mine just posted a long thing on fb about how she is on Paula's side because black people can say the N word without anyone thinking twice about it but when Paula says it everyone gets angry. DUMB. It's not right when ANYONE says it, ever! Anyone who says it should come under fire, not just Paula. Oh poor Paula for using an extremely offensive word, oh boo hoo...now she is fired.
My husbands grandmother got fired from Wal-mart for saying the N word at work. My brother got fired for saying the N word at work. People get fired for using the N word...why wouldn't she?

okay, my UO is that I think the whole "organic" hype in recent years is dumb. Mind you, I don't care if people choose to eat organic, spend your money how you like. But personally I think the whole "it's better for you" is a load of crap, & I also don't appreciate how some people who are advocates for it try to shove it down other peoples' throats either. I'm sure this is a very unpopular opinion & may get flamed away, but keep in mind I'm not saying this out of ignorance or because I don't understand what organic means, because I'm actually very aware.
It would take awhile to explain how I arrived at this conclusion, but part of it has been that my DH used to work at a grocery store for several years & knows a lot about the industry, & used to explain to me how "organic" does not mean all of what people think it does. Also there was a recent study that came out from Stanford (so obviously, very reputable) saying that eating organic has not been proven to have ANY health benefits. So that's the simplest version of my issue with it. If it were proven to actually have any health benefits I might consider it to be worth spending the extra money, but as of the evidence right now, there is no reason to think that.
Now if someone wants to eat free range & whatnot because they are an animal activist, I totally get that, however, when people say they eat organic because it's "better for you", I simply don't believe that is true. And in fact there can be dangers in eating organic fruits/veggies because w/out pesticides sometimes that's where you get harmful residues left over, like things they use in natural fertilizers that cause e-coli. Anyway, like I said I'm sure this is wildly unpopular, & many people really do think they are doing the best thing by eating organic, to each their own, this is just my opinion.

I didn't say it was ok to use the term. I said it was inappropriate. I also said the were good people.
I didn't say the fact that they were good people made use of the term acceptable.
I give up. People who use that word are not good people. Old, young, Southern, Northern, doesn't matter...white people can't use that word and be nice, good people. It's just about the worst thing anybody can say.

I agree, I started because of my DD. I don't buy everything organic, but I do buy organic chicken, eggs and when I can get it, beef (she can't drink milk so no worries there). I try to buy fruits and veggies listed on the dirty dozen list organic, but if the grocery store doesn't have it, I buy regular. And I still eat food prepared by others and in restaurants that isn't organic. I'm not nuts about it.

I hadn't had a peach in probably 15 years because they no longer tasted like peaches I used to get from my great aunt's tree when I was a kid. A couple of weeks ago, I bought some organic peaches for my daughter from Trader Joe's and OMG I was in heaven. I think I ate 3 out of the 4 I bought. And don't get me started on tomatoes.

I hesitate to even reply, but w/ the lack of evidence to show it actually makes any type of health difference I likely won't. Just my opinion...& I totally understand why people *think* it would make a difference (it does seem logical), it's just there is not sufficient evidence to actually show that.
For the organic thing - the farming practices necessary for certification are supposed to better for the environment. That is what started it all. I have no clue when people started attributing a more healthful food status to organically grown produce, but generally when I buy organic, I'm thinking of the Earth's health, not my own.

So, uhm, you've never heard of a really annoying thing called antibiotic resistance?
ETA: Antibiotics in meat is different than buying organic produce and fruits. I don't even know if the Stanford study included it in their study methods because it's been a while since I read it. Animals raised for slaughter are given tons of antibiotics prophylatically in an attempt to keep them from becoming ill. When you eat these animals you risk ingesting the antibiotics that they were given. Repeat exposure to antibiotics can cause antibiotic/antimicrobial resistance, which breeds what you hear called "super bugs", ie bacteria that cannot be killed with the traditional antibiotics, or, in some cases, with even the harshest antibiotics known to man. The strongest bacteria survive and they become plentiful! If you're comfortable perpetuating that cycle and risking your health, by all means, go for it.
A little reading for you... I have a lot more but don't have time to post it.
This is MUCH different than pesticides. Do some reading.

I buy organic meats, milk and eggs that are hormone free. I do this because I believe (I haven't researched it just makes logical sense to me) that part of the reason little girls are developing breasts earlier and beginning their menstrual period earlier is because of all the hormones in the food. I also buy much of my fruit/veggies at a local farmer market because I like to support my local farmers and the items are healthier. I am not obsessive about it, but I am pretty confident that buying hormone free meats and milk is better for my body and my future children than meat packed with hormones.

Where did you get this incorrect information?! There is no protection in ANY thread. This is a public forum and people are allowed to react and voice their opinions as they please (as long as their response does not violate TB TOS).
You are indeed incorrect about the "rules" of this type of post.
TFMC 08.02.13 at 19+ weeks. Everyday I grieve for my little Olive.
Ok. Thanks for clearing that up.
Honest truth: I googled what UO meant the first time I saw it and that's what my search results said.
I know this from personal experience.
omg I totally thought this too when there was the post yesterday for SF/bay area moms, & it was the person's first post.
TFMC 08.02.13 at 19+ weeks. Everyday I grieve for my little Olive.
I'm beginning to think her and ChiAmy are the same idiotic person.
OMG I almost made my UO a debate about whether or not they are trolls.
Then I realized that probably wouldn't qualify as an unpopular opinion.
TFMC 08.02.13 at 19+ weeks. Everyday I grieve for my little Olive.
I must have missed this thread. Hercules sounds like a peach.
You were the person who wished infertility on somebody weren't you? Yeah. Nice advice to take yourself.
I get it, based on those examples, you truly beleive there's no difference, so this is where the conversation is going to end for me...there's no point.
And if that was the word we were talking about, maybe you would have a point.
That's way more fun anyway! On a side note: I think I have successfully stirred the pot even though that wasn't my intention mobile smiley.
Oh they're the same thing to me as well. Both completely unacceptable and said by a racist. Lord, I can't believe you don't see that this is a problem.
The only reason I thought it was rude was because I thought this post was supposed to be kind of like the flame free posts but I was wrong. Sorry about that. Not being sarcastic
Oh lawd no!!
TFMC 08.02.13 at 19+ weeks. Everyday I grieve for my little Olive.
Mom+Dad+Josie+May 2015=2 under 2!!!!

I was a cook before I was a SAHM and I care as much about the quality of my ingredients as what's in or on them.

TFMC 08.02.13 at 19+ weeks. Everyday I grieve for my little Olive.
I am not obsessive about it, but I am pretty confident that buying hormone free meats and milk is better for my body and my future children than meat packed with hormones.
see, I do understand this.
