Re: UO Thursday

  • When someone has one or two posts to their name and posts on this board about a great deal or looking for local moms I get suspicious. If you have never introduced yourself or posted before until you post about a great deal I start to think You are trying to sell something you own or in the case of looking for local moms you might be a creeper.

I swear a lot, too.  Fluck just gets your point across so well.  I swear in front of my kid, too .... but she knows she's not supposed to and doesn't.  Like all normal kids, she's said a word here and there over the years, but we just talked about why it's not appropriate until she's much, much older.  This is totally an example of "Do as I say and not as I do." lol.  Despite mom's bad mouth, she's a great kid.  See? You can still swear like a sailor and have a great kid!

  • I've found that I have many recently when I post a thread saying, "x is insane!" And everyone says "noooo I love x!" Lesson learned on my part: I'll save it for Thursdays. :

My must recent UO is about people and their dogs. Some of this is from reallife umbridge, so no recent posters need be offended. Folks, your dog is not your baby. It is, however, a living, social creature that needs CONSTANT reminders of what is and is not acceptable behavior... like a toddler, perhaps, but I'm not yet a mom. No amount of handwringing will change behavior. Training will.
  • I am not as excited as I probably should be that one of my best friends is also pregnant (6 weeks). It will be awesome that our kids can know each other and grow up friends.

I am a brat about it right now, it'll eventually go away and I will love having someone to compare notes with.

  • It could be my ED brain talking, but when I see uber unhealthy cravings I tend to wonder if it's really a "pregnancy craving" or just someone that likes a specific food, wants to indulge and is reconciling it under the umbrella of pregnancy.  Perhaps this is because I haven't had an actual craving and I'll feel different when they hit....

The idea just feels so uncomfortable and presumptuous, and so many other unpleasant things. It seems fun and I think my poor excited mother is on the brink of secretly making one for me, but I just can't do it.

I had a hard time with this also. I've always paid my way and been self sufficient, so asking people to gift items that are several hundred dollars was tough.

I try and remember that people will give what they are comfortable with, and if that's a 10.00 gift card, those will add up and help!

Some women spent a lot of time on the TTC/TTCAL boards and instead of having to state your history every time you post, it's in the siggy. I remember people complaining about this on Aug 13' and the women who had their history in their siggy got pretty upset. I think the consensus was "If you don't like it, keep on scrolling"

I find it annoying when people foist their babies upon you under the guise of "You need the practice now!" If you want me to hold your baby so you can get a little break, just ask.

  • I think dropping the F bomb is nasty. Mostly in front of children. I grew up with my dad who was a drunk and never watched what he said around me and my brother. I can say that it truly effected me until I was a bit older. Anytime I am in public and witness a parent cursing at their child, I get irrationally angry. H and I will occasionally say a cuss word, but as a joke. We never say them in front of my daughter and I suspect as she gets older, we'll drop it all together. Maybe this isn't all that unpopular.

Fun story, My grandmother(who is very old and has a tremor) was holding my newborn when she decided to stand up and walk across the room. She said "Just practicing, I wanted to see if I could make it across the room with her." No one should practice anything with a baby. haha

I don't understand why people have their entire reproductive history in their siggy. Summarize people!

I'm with you on this, with the exception of bragplaining type posts. Cant stand a "I havent gained any weight yet.  What should I do?"  Um.....you should eat more food.

My UO is that some of the posters on this board are really harsh to some of the newbies unnessecarrily.  It bothers me b/c it drives them away and decreases board activity.

  • 100 percent agreed with skepticism about cravings.

I'm not sure if this is an unpopular opinion but... I cannot stand pregnancy books or apps right now. I'm sick of all the factoids of things I can't do or the dangers I'm presenting to my unborn child. Sleeping on my back will cause my baby to get too little oxygen. Shame for eating soft cheeses and hotdogs. So on and so forth. I'm tired of all this doom and gloom. I'm tired of feeling a wave of guilt when I wake up in the morning on my back. However, I eat all the soft cheeses at my leisure. Om nom nom.

Me too! I was bombarded with all the baby books early on and now they just sit in my drawer. I skipped ahead to the labor part anyway, so maybe the rest should just be a surprise. Besides, I'm due at the end of December, so I see what's coming long before it hits me just by reading this board :)

Okay new unpopular opinion. WTF is with all the stroller posts today ladies. Yesterday it was weight. Today it's strollers. I realize it's not as bad as the weight ones yet. But the day is mighty young.

Sorry!  I only saw the recommendation one before mine and had an actual question to ask regarding a certain stroller type.

My UO, the idea that because this is my 2nd child I should be completely over the excitement/nerves is ridiculous.  I had the pregnancy/delivery from hell with my first one and that makes me nervous this time around, and I am incredibly excited that after over a year of fertility treatments we got pregnant by surprise, not to mention that it's another little girl.

Really, I'm only mildly annoyed with them.  What grinds my gears is simply the number of posts we get on the topic on a daily basis.  Been there, read that.

This is what I get annoyed with. I think yesterday I was just a raving b*tch about everything though, so I was extra irritated.

  • My UO is that everyone should spend at least 10 minutes a day naked. And I don't think shower time should count. There is something so natural about it and I seriously think it helps, me at least, come to terms with any body issues I may have and also gives me much needed alone time where I can just relax. I'm not a closet nudist I promise.

Totally this! H and I have never been good at holding back our swear words, but even at three-years-old my kid knows that she's not supppsed to do it.

And she calls us out on our swearing. "Mom, it's not nice to say sh*t. You're not supposed to say that." To which I shamefully respond "You're right, I'm sorry."

I have white blond bleached hair. My dr. said it's fine but I know I am going to get looks when I am more obviously pregnant. People who judge can suck it! I would feel awful about myself If I went back to brown, which I haven't seen in over 10 years.

I don't understand pregnant women (not just on this board) that don't like maternity clothes. Maybe it's because I live in FL and in the summer it's normal to dress more casual so it is not as difficult to find cute and comfy things to wear.

I totally thought this too until I was getting cravings for foods I hadn't had in seriously 5 years. Things I hadn't eaten since college. Plus getting cravings for sweets when I NEVER eat sweets (and I seriously mean never ever). So now I'm a believer.

My UO is it really gets under my skin when I hear of pregnant ladies drinking. The caveat, however, is that the irritation I'm certain is born of pure jealousy rather than judgment based on fact, but it's my opinion nonetheless.

I would definintely say I have mental cravings and not physical cravings. My body isn't like OMG I need that Five Guys bacon cheeseburger...but if I think, man, a Five Guys bacon cheeseburger sounds sooooo good right now, I will continue to think about it until I have one...but I wouldn't want to eat one everynight.

And I will say that I've had some mental cravings for food I hadn't had in like 10-15 years...a frozen burrito to be exact.  I hadn't had one since I was 17, but I had to have one smothered with chili and cheese a few weeks ago.  Yeah, it was gross and I can see why I hadn't had one in 15 years...LOL

This is a verrrry UO, I know, but...I just can't seem to get myself to feel ok with creating a baby registry. The idea just feels so uncomfortable and presumptuous, and so many other unpleasant things. It seems fun and I think my poor excited mother is on the brink of secretly making one for me, but I just can't do it.

Our registry is our shopping list, really. We aren't ready to start buying lots of things until after the anatomy scan. But we've started window shopping and making a registry to compile what we think we'll get. I understand how it seems presumptuous. We haven't given any registry info to anyone.

It does feel acquisitive, but (a) you get completion discounts after the baby comes (whatever you don't get while you're pregnant, you get 10-15% off on purchasing later), and (b) I don't want 4 million diaper baskets when I plan on cloth diapering, or a bazillion bibs when I already have what I need. I just make sure to have a range of $ value on my registry - $4 pacifier sets all the way to my $800 crib. I don't expect to get everything, though - I'll end up buying most of it myself, probably.

I promise to never forget that this little dude deserves just as much love after the baby comes as he has now.

I guess my UO is I don't see that as a "debate". If you choose to use them, fine. It's a personal choice for your family, but you can't argue that they are pefectly safe. They are so statistically unsafe that they are being banned from being sold some places and the APA has long recommended against them. Period.

I feel bad for Paula Deen. It doesn't excuse her actions, but you'd be hard pressed to find an older lady from the south that hasn't used that word before. My grandparents and great grandma never say it with malice, but they still use it occasionally. Us grand kids always respond with "OMG you can't say that" and they'll apologize and probably say it again a couple weeks later. Does it make them sound ignorant? Of course. Does it make them terrible people that should be burned at the stake? Absolutely not. Shes innocent until proven guilty. So according to her deposition, referencing the word in conversations with her husband isn't worthy of her being crucified. Let her and her former manager hash it out in court. If you want to drop her from your company fine, but I'm sick of hearing the same two "incidents" repeatedly on the news. There's plenty to talk about.

So if your grandparents say it, they are also racists and horrible people IMO. They should know better by now. You have corrected them, they are probably not stupid and know for a fact that it's a derogatory, hurtful statement, yet they continue to say it.

This was how I thought of it when I was doing mine with DS. I researched brands & product reviews on things that I wanted / needed & wanted to keep a list of the ones I decided I wanted so I wouldn't forget when the time came. I never put any big ticket things on mine though except my glider/ottoman set.  DH's parent's insisted I choose one so they could go get it for me. That was the only reason that was on there.
