Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

too old for jarred food?

my daughter is 20 months old, and she is a relatively good eater except for veggies.  we have tried many different kinds of veggies cut up, steamed, mixed with hummus, etc, and really the only one she will eat is broccoli dipped in hummus.  however, she will eat carrots, sweet potatoes, and squash if it's the pureed jarred kind and she feeds it to herself pretty well (we get earth's best organic). a friend was surprised that she still eats jarred food sometimes and told me she's too old...but i want to make sure she has vegetables in her diet.  thoughts? thanks :)

Re: too old for jarred food?

  • I think it's fine! If she's eating veggies, she's eating veggies. Who cares how they get into her... that's my thought anyway!

As long as the rest of her diet isn't pureed then I don't think it's that bad BUT on the other hand, she won't ever get used to regular veggies if she can always get them in a pureed form...

I'd keep trying to offer veggies at every meal and hopefully she'll eventually like them.

    This.

  • This is exactly DS but with fruits. Sometimes he'll eat a little banana or a few grapes but that's about it. He eats a lot of avocados though. I let him feed himself fruit purees and he does a decent job. I'm okay with it because he's working on his motor skills and the pedi was impressed that he is already manipulating utensils. If your LO is getting enough of everything I wouldn't be worried at this point.
  • My daughter doesn't eat veggies either and the pedi was fine with her eating purees since she likes them.

  • I'd try a slow transition off of the jars. Start adding a little bit of veggie chunks at each meal and gradually increase until there's no puree left. GL!

  • I think people oversell the importance of veggies. Yes, they're great. If your kid doesn't eat a huge variety of them you can make up the nutrients in fruit. You should be constantly exposing your child and encouraging them but its not the end of the world if they go without for a while.

Your child is plenty old enough to start getting use to the taste and texture of foods in their natural state. I would start offering her real sweet potato at every meal period for the next two weeks. She may not eat then the first time you offer (or even the 10th) but with constant exposure she will eventually try. If its a taste she's used to and enjoys those should be the easiest to incorporate into her diet. Once she eats real veggies ditch the purees.

I agree with this.  The jarred veggies are nutritious so I don't think you need to give them up.  Just keep trying to offer non-jarred veggies in addition to the jarred ones to integrate them into LO's diet.  Toddlers can be so picky!
