Doc vent/WWYD?

So i had my 31 week ultrasound today. I had to ask her if baby was head down, and she said that she felt like she was. Which makes me happy. Everything looks and sounds good.

But as i was leaving i went to schedule my next appt. I decided to just go ahead and schedule the rest of my appts until im due. Just to make it easier. Well i got all of my appts scheduled, but my doc is going out of town... A WEEK BEFORE MY DUE DATE!!! Are you freaking kidding me? This is seriously her 4th time going out of town, in this pregnancy alone.

Now in reality, my kids have not ever been delivered by my doctor, so why would this one be different. But we have somewhat discussed inducing me. My doc said that if baby girl isnt here by my 39 week appt than she would induce me between 39 and 40 weeks. Well thats the week she will be gone. Im beyond furious about it right now.

Ps. We have discussed inducing me, bc of how fast my son came. I know that i should let her come on her own. But i really want to get induced. It will higher my chances of not having her at home, and actually getting my tubes tied while im still in the hospital vs. getting released, and than going back and having it done.

WWYD? Would you ask to be induced at 38 weeks or just let her come on her own?

Re: Doc vent/WWYD?

  • I would not choose to be induced, unless it's medically necessary.

Agreed. Though it would annoy me that my OB would not have already discussed with me his plans for leaving town, there's not really anything you can do about it.

  • No I wouldn't ask to be induced early and while it may be frustrating to you that she is going to be gone, doctors work very taxing hours. So if she takes 1 vacation or 5, you really don't know the reason behind it. She may have an ill family member or special circumstances. Would it be the worst thing to wait until baby comes?

  • I think furious might be the hormones talking.

I wouldn't be comfortable inducing at 38 weeks. There aren't any other OBs in your office you can work with?

    image image

  • It would depend but I may choose to do it on the very last day possible with my doc. That's if we are 38 and 6 may be but no earlier.

But yes I would be upset too

Yes And to be honest, doctors are allowed to take vacations even if you are having a baby. They can't work around every single patient's schedule. As annoying as it might be, it is what it is.

    Seriously, especially early.

It's not something that would bother me. My OB was out of town the week of my due date with DD. Tis life.

I agree 100%.  Although, I am at risk for being induced for medical reasons and am terrified of it. So, that's my own personal bias.

I know that its not medically necessary to be induced and i can wait for her to come on her own. But my labor with my son was literally 1 hour, start to finish. My main reason for wanting to be induced is bc im afraid ill be home all alone, with my kids and than she will come. I dont want to give birth at home, but more than anything, im afraid its going to happen so fast, that my kids might see all the blood if they walk in where i am, wondering why im freaking out. Sorry if thats confusing.

Its legit enough for me, I'm considering having one for the same reason.

I don't take issue with you wanting to be induced, it's how *early* you're planning this procedure that rubs me the wrong way.

To be fair, she was planning on 39-40 weeks, it's her doc who wants her to consider 38 weeks.

I'd consider the tail end of 38 weeks if there are no other options for OBs.

Of course all judgement is with held when it comes to medical necessity. The OP made it sound like she just wanted her own doctor and she's agreeing because she's simply afraid of giving birth not in a hospital. To me, personally, those are not good enough reasons. Though, it is ultimately her decision to make, and none of my business.

I didn't see mention of her dr suggesting this anywhere, only the OP considering it. 38 weeks is barely term, ffs. I would run from any dr that ok'd an elective induction at that point.

So no, OP, I would not even dream of what you're considering. Sorry. Nope.

  • I'm in the minority here that I have nothing against elective inductions, but not before 39 weeks. I don't see why you'd need to induce before 39 weeks when she's not delivered any of your other kids. She'll have someone covering her practice, schedule it with them.
    Due with #5 April 22, 2015. It's a girl!!!!!

Yes it was planned, yes we know what causes that, no we are not on public assistance, and yes we will be getting cable after this. ;)

  • The ob I had for my first was both my sister in laws ob as well.  He did not deliver any of my niece, my son or my nephew (all 9 - 10 months apart) because he was on holidays.  Its just something you have to deal with.

  • I'm confused at how your induction increases your chance of having a tubal?????? Unless you were hoping for a failed induction that lead to c section. I seriously think and hope that after calming down you will re think this whole thing. Induction just because is not a good idea and if you want a tubal just tell the doc and get one before discharge.

I have also discussed an induction with my doctor for this reason but I don't really care who delivers my baby especially since the nurses do most the work.
  • I would never choose to be induced before 40 weeks unless medically necessary.

Thanks for your replies ladies. I have calmed down a bit. And i know that doctors can take vacations and have lives. Im just more shocked that she will be taking another one. I am really nervous to be getting my tubes tied, and it is something that is making me really nervous for delivery. But i know its something i want. Im not going to asked to get induced that early. But im pretty sure that my doc does want to induce me bc of how fast my son came. She will probably have another doc do it, no biggie.

And I would never chose to deliver at home before induction. Especially since OP stated that her last birth was an hour and she currently takes care of her other kids at home. I do however agree that another doctor should do it after 39 weeks rather then going earlier.

I actually think that you and your dr have a perfectly legitimate reason to discuss an induction. Having a baby at home without any medical help can be very risky and I certainly wouldn't want my son to witness that. However, I wouldn't do anything earlier than 39 weeks, even if it meant not having my dr involved. I can totally understand your frustration and hope you can come to a reasonable solution with your dr.
  • FWIW, I would prefer to be induced than have my baby at home, for sure.  I also would prefer to have an OB different from my own deliver my baby rather than be induced before 39 weeks.

  • I am sorry you are upset, however, like other posters have mentioned, Doctors are allows vacations. You are not her only patient so if she planned her vacation around you, she would be gone when someone else is due. They are allowed to have lives outside of their work as well.

     Baby Birthday Ticker Ticker

  • I would not mess with mother nature. Let her come on her own. Remember, due dates ate merely estimates. Only nature and your baby knows how much time is needed. Leave it alone.
  • That happened to me with my first born. Dr went out of town. Although it can be slightly to highly annoying, [ personally I really didn't care] I knew there would be other highly trained medical staff there that had My personal medical chart, that were perfectly capable of delivering my baby, so like all these other ladies, I see no reason to induce either. Although I'm sorry you are upset about your dr. Leaving.
  • I would be annoyed, but I wouldn't expect my OB to plan their life around my due date.

Instead, I would ask what the plan is to included another physician in her group and how your information will be communicated. Just to make sure everyone is on the same page.
