Success after IF

Should I worry?

So whenever dd hears a loud noise like the toilet flushing, loud bangs, etc. she covers her ears and sometimes cries if it was an unexpected noise that startled her. She does this a lot.

Because I read too many stories and dh was a teacher until last month, we're questioning if it's a sensory issue or just normal stuff. Dd is 28 months and doesn't seem to have any other signs of other issues around loud music, crowds, etc.

Wdyt? Ask the pedi? Normal?

Thanks!

For a loud bang or something startling, I wouldn't worry about it.  But a toilet flushing?  Unless your toilet sounds like an airplane toilet, I wouldn't consider that a loud or scary noise.  Does she still do it if you tell her you are about to flush the toilet?

I am one of those who always think it's a good idea to ask the pedi just in case.  I'd rather know and get early intervention if necessary than wait and be surprised later and kick yourself looking back.  Of course, take my advice with a grain of salt as I have absolutely no qualifications to advise in this situation.  That is just my gut feeling.

Yes, she covers her ears before we even flush it. Any toilet. And she used to cry for hand driers but she's usually OK now to dry her hands.

And when there is a surprise crazy loud noise...like a noise maker you blow into...her lip quivers and she hides so I'll scoop her up and she'll cry a little into me until I calm her down.

Should I schedule an appointment you think? Otherwise she won't be in until her 3 year well visit, barring any illnesses.

Hmm.  Now that to me sounds more like normal behavioral stuff rather than sensory issues.  But again, I have no qualifications for that.  Hopefully someone with some experience will chime in here.  But if it were me, I would probably call the pedi (or nurse line and leave a message, whatever) and explain the situation and see what the pedi would recommend.  Then I would base my reaction on the pedi's response.  GL, I hope it's just a case of a sensitive LO, and nothing to worry about.

  • IDK, but my LO hates clapping. He cries hysterically at applause.  But I'm also paranoid, too, partially because of my Fragile X permutation even though I was assured the chances of him having it were exceedingly low.  I'm a little freaked out by this movement he does with his hands that (IMO) looks like hand flapping and by the fact that his head is so huge.  I'm brining both up with my pedi at his visit on Wednesday.

I wouldn't worry about it.  My kids HATE loud noises - and I am not aware of many kids that do like them!  Both kids cover their ears when we flush a public toilet (so many of those are very loud if you really pay attention), and also hate the hand dryers.  I think ages 2-3 are the worst for those things.  DS seems to be a bit better this year.  He was really bad, and I was worried he had sensory issues too - he freaked out about putting on sunblock and wouldn't come near me when I was holding an iced coffee in case the cold touched him, and those were especially bad when he was 3.  He seems much better now.  But if you are worried, I would definitely talk about it with the pedi!

Could it be an attention thing?

My kids aren't bothered by loud noises, however my daughter has really long, thick eyelashes and she is constantly playing with them.  I tell her all of the time to stop touching her eyes and now I almost feel like sometimes she is just doing it because she knows it annoys me ;)  I also think it is a sensory thing.

My son loves eating hair, but not dog hair or just any hair - my hair.  My hair is really long and if he finds a strand of it he'll almost run it through his mouth like dental floss.  It grosses me out so much and I've thought about bringing it up to the pediatrician, but again I think it's a sensory thing.

  • Could you possibly email your doctor? Then if he/she does think its a concern then you could schedule an appointment.

I think as long as your DC is developing typically it shouldn't be an issue and she will probably grow out of it. If there are areas where your DC is behind in then I would start to worry.

You make a good point. That may be it. I'll keep an eye on my reaction. Thanks!

Since of course dd hasn't done it since I posted this, lol.

thanks! Yes, I'll probably just end up calling the nurse line if she keeps it up.
