My son is 17 months and he can have his paci in the car and in his crib.  We started weaning him at about 12 months.  I just make it a game and ask him "what stays" when we are leaving his room or the car.  He doesn't really have any trouble turning it over.  He just started STTN a month or so ago, so I am not sure when we are going to wean the night paci!

  • We were forced to wean at two when ds started biting through them and it was a choking hazard. We were planning on letting him have a nighttime paci until 4 or when he naturally weaned, whatever came firs.

we discontinued daytime paci use at 12 months. From 12-24 months he only got his Paci for bed/nap time/ long car rides.

  • For dd1, At 6 months pacis we only for the car, sleep time, and sick days.

At 1 year only for sleep time.

We took it away for good at 21 months when she starting crawling IN to her crib to get them. It was suddenly stressing her out to see them but not have them and we weren't about to go backwards so we just took them away then.

Dd2 is 7 months and will not take one. At all. Ever. I miss the paci fix dd1 would get.
  • DD was attached to her paci until about 7.5 months. All of a sudden she just started pursing her lips and shaking her head no. Right around then she fell in love with her blanket and wouldn't us a paci anymore.

  • My DD was a pacifier addict.

I only allowed it in bed and in the car.  There was a window (around 14 months) when she was less interested in it, and I knew I could have gotten rid of it.  I didn't though, because she had no other comfort object at the time.  At that age, I just didn't want to rock the boat.

By 17 months she was more attached than ever, and she continued to suck it until the ripe old age of... well... four.  Shortly after her 4th birthday, we agreed that she would let it go.  It took about 4 nights for her to be able to fall asleep normally without it.  We allowed her to read with her lamp on instead of sucking.

Like others above, my 2nd child would NOT take one at all.  It was tough when he was a baby, but not having to deal with that stupid pacifier as a toddler was awesome!

  • DS1 was allowed one at sleepy time when he wasn't nursing to sleep. He's 2.5 and we recently totally cut it out. We'd decided he could keep using it as long as he was still nursing and as long as he was still teething. When those things were done and it started to cause some problems (temper tantrums during the day when he couldn't have it), we decided to let him pick out a special bedtime water cup instead. It was 3 rough days followed by 3 weeks of less sleeping, but then it petered out and we got back to life as normal.
