Is this safe for car?

Ive read that you can't put a baby in a snowsuit in the car, that it isn't safe for the carseat.  Is this a safe alternative?  Im not sure if its thin enough?

Or do we just dress them in regular clothes and put blankets over them?

Sorry, new mom and i'm confused.

  • I'm not sure about the fleece bunting, but we registered for one of these...not really sure about it either, though.

  • The problem with snowsuits and coats is that they are thick-

the straps cant get as tight as they need to to securly ensure the baby's saftey in the event of a collision. With Alek we had him in his car seat and had a cozy cover over the seat to help. but winter is such a dangerous time of year as it is. There's really no safe alternative. Keep the car warm and dress baby in layers but try to avoid the snowsuits and thicker coats-

blankets would be an alright alternative.

(What I don't understand is that it was bad for the seat itself? whaat??)

  • We just did regular clothes, got a cover that went over the carseat, and used a couple blankets.  I didn't use any type snowsuits or coats in carseats.

  • That should be fine.  Anything that lets you buckle the carseat properly is OK.  I think it's just the bunting snowsuits for newborns that don't have a separation between the legs that are a real problem.  You can even get some of those that have a slot for the carseat buckle and those are just fine, too.

  • I thought this was kind of cool of ways to safely wear a coat.

I think I've also heard tricks about if you put your child in(no coat) and adjust the straps accordingly, then put their light coat on and put them in again if the straps still fit appropriatly you're okay. So if it is a light sweatshirt or jacket it would probably work.

    Hope this helps a bit.

See, i really want a bundle me but i was told that they are unsafe and the hospital won't let you leave with the baby if you have one of these in your carseat.

  • The main concern is that the straps need to fit snugly enough around the child so that in case of an accident, the child is fully protected.  Basically, you aren't supposed to put anything too thick between the child's body and the straps of the car seat.

We never bought anything special to keep DD warm in the winter.  We really didn't go out much really, but when we did we dressed her appropriately and then after strapping her in her seat tucked a recieving blanket snugly around her... and had a thicker blanket as well - this way when getting out of the car, the thicker blanket could be thrown over the entire carrier to block out wind/cold/etc.

  • DD1 wore that exact suit all last winter. It's actually very thin fleece and extremely easy to tighten the straps of the seat tight enough for safety. I asked moms the same question and this was the suit that I was directed to get. DD was always cozy warm- and the foldover hands/feet were perfect!  DD was 4-9mos during the cold months and would move blankets near her face, making me nervous, and unable to concentrate on driving when you worry about grabbing the blanket behind you, etc, so this worked well for us.
