My LO is 9 weeks. I've been block feeding trying to help my oversupply. My LO does fine with the first let down, but after he burps and I try to put him back on the same side he TOTALLY freaks out...popping on off and crying/screaming. I don't know how to keep him calm and keep him on the same side so he gets another let down of the fattier milk, which he needs he has poor weight gain green poop. Any advice or tips would be appreciated!!
Re: Angry baby and let down!!
Are you pulling him off the boob to burp him? If so, don't! Just let him nurse until he comes off himself.
My routine with Elena is to feed one side until she releases the nip, burp her and then I change her diaper. In the middle of the night the diaper change wakes her up enough to nurse the other side. For your little guy maybe it'll kind of reset his mind so he'll re-latch on the first side?
I agree with the PP, you don't need to burp midway. BF babies get way less air if any then FF babies. Just let baby come off the breast on his own.
Another poster had this issue and was advised by an LC to pump or hand express for 3 to 5 mins before feeding LO to remove some of the foremilk. I tried it, it worked for me along with the block feeding. I stopped expressing beforehand after baby's poops were back to yellow and also stopped block feeding at that time. I now feed one boob at each feeding except for night time before she goes to bed when she wants both boobs.
Is your LO gaining at least 0.5 oz a day and having lots of poopy and wet dipes? How do you know his weight gain is not good?
If your LO ever fusses while being fed but you know he's still hungry try rocking or bouncing him to sleep, lay him down on your bed on his side with a rolled up blankie behind his back and quickly latch him on and nurse him side lying. Usually my LO will be so sleepy and relaxed she will finish eating and then doze off peacefully after eating and comfort nursing. Nursing side lying is my ultimate fav for sure.
Maybe XP your post on the Breastfeeding board for more insights from veteran BFers.
All this! Couldn't agree more.
