Transitioning from a nipple shield?

Hi ladies -

I've just started lurking on this board since my DD decided to arrive a month early! She's 2 weeks today, and we're finally starting to get the hang of breastfeeding - in the past week, she's transitioned from an eye dropper (!) through a series of progressively more-difficult nipples, and is now feeding exclusively from the breast, using a nipple shield to help her latch on.We haven't had to supplement her with any formula since Sunday, and are pretty psyched!

Our last challenge is transitioning from the shield to just the nipple - we're taking it slow, BFing on demand, and essentially letting her "play" for as long as she needs. She'll latch on periodically for a bit, but definitely still needs some extra assistance.

I was just curious whether anyone had a similar experience, and if so, if you had any tips that worked for you in getting over this last hurdle.

Many thanks!

Re: Transitioning from a nipple shield?

  • No advice in transitioning from the shield, but I did want to mention that my DD has been using the nipple shield the entire time. I know they say to not continue to use them (I think because it can affect your supply) but we had/have no issues with supply.

    GL!

  • Thanks! I'm not too concerned with supply, just kind of had this vision of being able to pop her onto the boob whenever I need, and I'd love to be able to do it w/out the shield, just for convenience, you know? But this is DEFINITELY better than a week ago, so...onwards and upwards, I suppose? Big Smile

  • I used a shield for three months. I would try during that time to intermittently get DD to latch but it was not successful. One day around three months I tried and she did it without any difficulty. I did keep a shield in my diaper bag for when we were out. I would just keep trying intermittently.
  • I used a shield for three weeks..my LC have me great tips to help wean the shield. The first couple of days I would nurse for a few minutes with the shield then take it off...this helped my LO.  My LC also gave me tips to get him to receive latch with ou t the shield..GL...I also wanted to be able to just pop him on when needed..no shield was nice...I also stored the shield after I cleaned it...in my bra sometimes...
