Hi all- just looking for a bit of advice/motivation. I would like to lose 50 pounds (which would be right at the highest end of healthy bmi) prior to ttc #3 a year from July. I really struggle with motivation and tend to binge when I slip up. I really want to make healthy changes and and weight watchers has worked well for me in the past. I just can't seem to stick to it this time though... my pcp recommended the south beach diet, as I struggle with tummy fat and had trouble concieving my first. I ended up being successful with clomid, but then developed gestational diabetes. During that pregnancy I was prescribed metformin and have been on it ever since (including pregnancy #2, where I did not develop gestational diabetes). My main goals are to get fit before ttc again, and to avoid heart disease and type two diabetes later in life. Any success stories, advice, motivation would be greatly appreciated. Btw... I'm 31 years old if that makes any difference.

Re: 6 months pp and need to lose 50 pounds- south beach or weight watchers?
ETA: Also, you log your food in its program. The idea is you burn more than you eat. However, entering food through that program is tedious, so I use My Fitness Pal instead.
I also read Jillian Michael's book Slim for Life and highly recommend it.
Just remember this quote, "A goal without a plan is simply a dream." So make a plan. Good luck!
South Beach is not a lifestyle change, it's just a diet. I used to have great success on South Beach, but it wasn't a viable choice for me in the long run and I would gain everything back that I lost and then some.
I'm a Lifetime WW member, and I lost over 60 pounds and kept it off for two years before getting pregnant. However, it took me two years to lose that weight, slowly making healthy changes and ingraining mindful eating as a total lifestyle change rather than something I'd do temporarily. If you can get in the mindset that "this is for life" I would encourage you to return to WW over South Beach. Low carb diets are untenable, IMO.
I agree, life style changes are the most important. I worked as an nutritionist before going back to get my masters (have a bachelors in nutrition) and sort of left the field because it is really discouraging and difficult. I do feel the south beach diet is not very healthy, going that low carb is bad for your body.
I too tend to binge eat when I fall off the wagon, but I do it less and less with age. The only advice I really have is lifestyle changes.....start slow and don't restrict yourself too much or the binge eating is more likely to happen.
Just keep in mind whatever changes you make you have to keep in order to keep the weight off. So if you lose weight on South Beach, you will have to stay in their maintenance level to keep it off. If you lose weight doing weight watchers and counting points you will have to keep counting points.
For what it's worth, I lost 40 pounds doing a clean eating, moderate/low carb diet (when I was 31 btw). I have kept the weight off for four years (except for when I was pregnant, and lost the weight again pp). Not sure why someone would say that that is dangerous or unrealistic to stay with it. I like not counting calories or points. I just stick with lower carb food most of the time and I don't gain weight.
I think it is worth looking into at least. It is a natural way to control your blood sugar which is why it was suggested to you by your doctor.
ETA: I suggest reading the book Why We Get Fat by Gary Taubes. It really helped me understand how my body processes macronutrients and why not all calories are equal.
i agree with everything julie1408 posted. I did ww over a decade ago and dropped 15 lbs, never gained it back. It does teach you good eating habits - what moderation really means, must eat tons of veggies to not be starving etc. I like the program. I don't like south beach - I think low carb and low fat is a bad combo. I follow a mostly paleo diet now. I eat high fat, high protein and low-moderate carbs. Paleo isn't necessarily low carb. It's easy to follow, simple, and no calorie counting. People are very successful on it
I have a nice bike, and would really like to ride more often. I just went back to work and am really struggling with motivation and exhaustion. The thing I liked about weight watchers were the meetings. I just hate to spend the money right now. I think I need a kick in the pants
I also know, whether or not I do the south beach diet, I need to track my carbs in a healthier way. I really really like sweets. Thanks for the feedback ladies! I appreciate the support.
How did you manage your weight gain during pregnancy after losing all the weight before hand? Did you gain a bunch back, like more than the suggested amount?
