Baby Names

Jan?

So, we are pretty set on Alice, and hoping for a bfp soon, fx, but I'm having second thoughts. We loved Alice nine years ago, but now I see it everywhere. I had a great friend when I was young named Jan, and I think it's so sweet, uncommon and a bit unexpected. Is it boring though? Which would you choose? Alice feels to me more classy, but Jan feels so simple and sweet. I don't see the name mentioned here ever (I should lurk more maybe) so I'm excited for some opinions!

Re: Jan?

  • I'm not a fan.....and that is my Aunt's name. It is shortened for her though, from Janet. I prefer Alice. Or if you like Jan a lot, there is always Janice. But again, NMS.

  • I like Jan a lot, but would prefer it used as a nn and a more formal name on her birth certificate to grow up with.

    Examples:

    Janet - My favorite.

    Janine

    Janice

    Jana

    Janelle

  • I think of the character from The Office.  Jan is nice, but I agree that I'd use it as a nn.  Janice and Janine are nice IMO.

  • Jan and Alice. Brady Bunch fan, I take it?

  • Thanks! We are sticking with Alice. I think Jan makes a great nn too, I just don't love any of the more formal names.

I much prefer Alice. When I read the title I actually thought it was the boy name pronounced Yahn.

  • I like it, but I'm biased. It was my aunt's FN and my grandma's MN, both were actually Janet. I like that it's an older name that people don't use much any more, but still a good, solid, legit name.
  • ***cringe***  Jan is my mother-in-law's name so I do not have a good association with that name :-)

However, I really like the name Alice!  Very sweet and pretty.  I also like Elyse which is similar.
