Out of pocket L&D expenses

Hi new mommas! I'm a FTM and my husband and I are trying to plan the best we can financially in the next few weeks for our big arrival! I was wondering what your experiences were with insurance and out of pocket labor and delivery expenses that weren't covered by insurance. I'm seeing midwives in an OB practice that has a "global fee" that you pay at the end of delivery. I have a yearly maximum out of pocket expense which will be met, but I was wondering if there were routine procedures (pain relief, epidural, etc) or any other services/products that you found were not covered by insurance? Any information you can give would be appreciated!

Re: Out of pocket L&D expenses

  • This is going to vary WILDLY by person, doctor, and insurance policy. My insurance covered everything except for co-pays once I hit my $3,000 deductible, so I paid ~$50 OOP total for a $32,000 bill. (My employer provides a HSA to cover our deductible).

  • We have an HSA plan with a $5000 deductible and $6500 out of pocket maximum. I had a repeat c-section, so that procedure with anesthesia and routine hospital care for me and DD3 essentially brought us to that $6500. Any other medical care right now is covered 100% for us.

  • We had to meeet a 3000 OOP expense but still had to pay another 489 to my OB and the hospital. With the anesthesia, and other pain meds we owe another 450 to the different care providers. I should mention I had a RCS.
  • I paid $35 out of pocket for my portion of our medical bills. All I had to pay was the hospital co-pay, so that was awesome! I believe we had to pay about $1500 for our DD's bills because she is covered through my husband's insurance.

  • Actually these responses did help me a lot. I have a good understanding of my policy and know what my yearly out of pocket max is, but I was just wondering if there were any "surprise" expenses that insurance didn't cover. I think we're in good shape, and I can rest easy!
  • We had to pay about $800 to my OB's office which covered all my prenatal care, delivery, and postnatal appointment. Our hospital bill was about 2k. We had to pay for things like the epidural/anesthesiologist, my son's circumcision, hospital stay, etc. you may get a few "surprise bills" for the baby.
