Hi Ladies!
I am 29 weeks along, and just found out i failed my first glucose test. i'm going back tomorrow for the longer version (and i am hating this fasting, let me tell you!) and keeping my fingers crossed. I just had my first appointment with a new doctor who is willing to do a VBAC for me (2 hours from where i live) but a comment she made makes me anxious that i won't be a candidate anymore if i fail this second test....the only childbirth book i have is what to expect when you're expecting, left over from my son, and it has very little information on gestational diabities and VBACs in general...do any of you know if i can still try for a VBAC if i do have GD?
Re: Failed Glucose Test :(
DS2 - Oct 2010 (my VBAC baby!)
That's rough. Few women go on to fail the longer test, so you can have that hope. Are you in your local ICAN group?
VBAC & GD varies greatly by provider. Some won't let you go past 40w even if well-controlled (which isn't evidence based nor according to ACOG guidelines) and some will and be more reasonable about it. It really depends.
The reason I asked about your local ICAN is to find another option for an OB or even a midwife if this one is too jumpy about VBAC.
I failed my 1 hour GTT but passed the 2 hour. However, b/c DS2 was so much bigger than DS1 (and I failed the 1hr test with DS2 and not DS1), I've been VERY conscious of the carbs I eat now. I'm not on a GD diet, but I try to eat like it w/o the blood sugar testing.
There are more things to consider with GD (early degradation of the placenta, larger baby, etc.) that may make a VBAC more challenging, but I know people who have done it. It's worth trying/fighting for if it's something you feel strongly about.
Thanks ladies
I'm not a part of Ican - i live in midcoast maine, and unfortunatly there is only one chapter in my state, 2 1/2 hours away. Switching Dr. isn't an option either, i don't think. I've already had to switch once because the hospital near me won't do VBACs, so now i'm driving two hours to portland...the staff seems very supportive of VBAC, and i don't know they're stance on GD...I guess i'll just keep my fingers crossed...
The test was AWFUL btw! The hospital messed up the lab orders, so instead of fasting for 12 hours and then having the test, for 16 hours total fasting, it took 20!!! I wasn't sure i could walk on my own by the time i could leave, i was so hungry!!! Hopefully i'll have good numbers though...
Thanks for the info - it's so frustrating how often it seems that obs and midwives push for things that aren't medically nessisary - i've read that one of the biggest risks with GD is the super larger baby...well, i'm almost six feet tall, and i was over 10 pounds myself - my mom delivered me all natural, with no problem. my son (Breech c/s baby) was under 7 lbs! I'm not really concerned about having a large baby, and i hope i don't get refused a VBAC because of the dr.s fears...especailly since they seem to constantly over estimate the baby size! (sorry, kinda went on a rant there!)
You may pass the next test...good luck!
I have GD and had GD with my son...I was diet controlled.I had a c section at 39 weeks after being induced, no progress. I was induced due to placenta breakdown...my ultrasound also indicated my son was large...8 lbs...I am tiny so 8lbs is large for my frame. My son was 8.5.
This time around we are just going to wait and see...I would love a natural birth...I am worried that if I don't go into labor before 39 weeks..I will have the same outcome. I have GD again and am diet controlled again...my last ultrasound indicatedmy little one was right on the 50th percentile for growth so I am crossing my fingers.
