toilet trainingn on a low-key vacation - ok?

We're taking two weeks to visit family, mine then DH's - in July.  DD will turn two years old on this trip.  It will be the only time I am consistantly with DD during the day until our next vacation in October.  So I'd like to start potty training. DH and I will have more time than usual to sit with her, take her to the bathroom whenever she asks etc.  We enjoy out time with our families, but it's definately a slower pace than our normal (borderline hectic) lives.  I think this could work....

She's showing many signs that she's ready for focused potty training.  She likes the little seat we put on the toilet, as opposed to a training potty.  She thinks it's fun to sit on the potty, and often goes a few hours with a dry diaper.

Has anyone else done toilet training away from home?  Any regrets? Any success stories?

  • I'd be more concerned with the accidents in someone else's house.  When we started potty training we took away the diapers and went straight to underware.  We plied her with liquids and had her pee her patns a few times so she was able to learn how it felt when she had to go. Plus it was potty time every half hour, that might be too much if you're constantly taking your LO to the potty - especially with all the excitement and changes to schedule and new people.

I'd wait if you can.  maybe do it over a long holiday weekend?

  • There's no way I would try it.  On vacation, kids get all off schedule and there's so much going on that I wouldn't add one more potentially stressful thing to the mix.  Plus, I think any time you're out of the house, it's difficult.

But neither of my kids was ready to train right when they turned 2, either.

October isn't very far away, sadly!

  • My mom loves to say I was potty trained on the beach.  I was about 22 months and just started going before we left for our vacation.  My mom decided to go with it and brought the little potty in the car and down to the beach.  I think you can do it, especially if she is showing signs.  If not, it might be easier to just wait and plan to do it another time.

  • If both sets of parents are okay with accidents in their house, it's worth a try, especially since she seems ready and you and your H are up for it. It very well might not work with all the other upsets of schedule, surroundings, etc, but if it's what you want to do, go for it.

  • No I would not start then.  You need to do potty training as part of your normal daily routine.  You make it seem like you alone are the one to PT your child and if you don't do it now it won't happen.  I think that you should be working together with your childcare provider.  Do you use daycare or a nanny?  Hopefully whoever is caring for your child is on board with your decision to potty train.  Daycare really did most of the work of training DD.  She was perfect at school and then would get busy playing at home and forget to go potty.  I knew she was mostly there already, so I started bribing her with candy, and within roughly 2 weeks we were in underwear with only like 2 accidents.

  • I would also wait until you get home.  We didn't potty train away from home, but my ILs visited on day 3 of potty training and that alone caused MAJOR regression because DD was so distracted, ILs brought new toys, etc..  I can't imagine trying to potty train in an entirely different environment.
  • What's the agenda for the trip? If you're going to be sitting around a family member's house literally ALL DAY talking/playing/eating and they are okay with DD in no bottoms and potty trips every 30 minutes, I think it could work. But if you're going to be doing activities, going out to eat, etc, then I think it's not a good time. I did buy disposable plastic tablecloths to drape over any soft surface DD was hanging out on those first two days (ie couch, bed if we were sitting reading books, rugs that we were hanging out on) because I figured I should be ready to deal with an accident at any time. I would doubly recommend that if you're at someone else's house.

PT is a chore and not part of a relaxing vacation. I would also fear accidents. Enjoy your vacay. Save the hard core training for home. 'Practice' PT'ing by sitting on the potty and using pull ups.

I agree with the bold.  We did three day PT by lori Jensen and those three days were absolute he!! for me.  It was being attached to her 24/7 for three days, no going out, no cooking dinner, no getting laundry done, and definitely no hanging out with friends/family just watching her like a hawk (and yes there were accidents during those three days).  It was totally worth it in the end, but I wouldn't do it when I was trying to relax on vacation.

i went the pull up route, so no worries about accidents. We went to disney while potty training. He actually did really well! When they are ready you'll know. Pretty much overnight DS decided to use the potty. We stayed in pull ups about 3 months and he told us he wanted to quit wearing them. We were pretty laid back about it. The whole "let them pee their underwear" thing never worked for him. He really didn't seem to care if he was wet lol.
