Accepting used gifts?

If someone tells you they are getting you xyz since their child is growing out of it, will you still register for something similier?

I have a 6 month niece and my cousin said by the time I have my LO,I can use her stroller (among other items) since she will grow out of it. However, not registering for a stroller makes me nervous since I don't know what condition it will be in or if my niece will really grow out of it.  Should I register for my own?

Thanks for your opinions.

Re: Accepting used gifts?

  • I would in case your cousin changes her mind or forgets or like you said, if it's in bad shape.  If anything, if you register for a stroller and get one, I'd take the hand-me-down and keep it in DH's car or give to one of the sets of grandparents to keep at their house so that they have one and you don't have to lug yours back and forth.  In fact, giving duplicates to grandparents is something I recommend for pretty much anything you get.  Anytime you can lug one less thing, the better.

  • I would let her know your concerns and also you could ask to see the items and figure out if you'd rather have new ones. I LOVE hand me downs and am a big thrift shopper but you need to know what your getting. She shouldn't be offended I wouldn't think.... I wouldn't be.

    This. Good luck!
  • This happened to me with DS.  A family member told me not to register for a pack and play because they were giving me one.  So I didnt. After the shower I opened it and it was covered in dog hair.  I had to throw it out. ( I am allergic to dogs). So I eneded up having to go buy one.  I would register for it and if you get it and like the one she gave you, you can always take it back and get things that you didnt get that you wanted.

  • Once you have items in hand I would remove the items.  I am all about second hand items because of how much money you will save in the end.

  • I'm in the same exact situation. My SIL is graciously giving us her baby's swing. At least she sent me a picture of it. It's not the one I had picked out, but hey.. Free swing!

What I did was I put the swing I picked out as bought on our registry. If we never actually get the swing or we do and it's broken.. Which seems unlikely but you never know.. Then I will click unsought. If we get it and it's perfect then I will just delete the swing off the registry!

This. I registered for a travel system because it will be so handy but someone ended up giving me an infant car seat. I'm giving the car seat to my mom since she will be down here helping me the first couple weeks.

You might want to check the manufacture date on the car seat. They expire and typically car seats are the one thing to NOT get used or as a hand me down.

  • I'd still register for it. Maybe you'll return it, maybe you'll have an extra, maybe you'll need it. Either way registering for it can't hurt.

  • (not sure how to unbold my post?? all my normal options are gone. lol anyways...)

I would register for the things you want, and if you get them, THEN you can decide if you want the hand me down/or the new one.  :)

  • I would definitely register for it. My parents have gotten us a few things from friends of theirs with grandkids who have grown out of them. They're all in decent condition, but I figure it would be nice to have duplicates of some things, so my husband and I have less to worry about when we travel.
