Sleep questions

I am 23 weeks today and bought a Snoogle pillow. Ironically I still keep waking up on my back all night long.   Not sure how to keep from rolling over. And I feel like when I am on my side the weight of my belly is pulling me and uncomfortable. I don't know what to do for either issue. Is there a pillow thin enough to go in between the side of my belly and the bed if I'm on my side? I guess I could use a blanket.  And then I worry too each time I wake up on my back if I'm hurting the baby.  Any feedback is much appreciated. I know I have a long way to go still and disappointed the sleep stuff is starting already.

Re: Sleep questions

  • I'm 29 weeks and 3 days and sometimes sleep on my back for a short period of time. It's comfortable if my head is propped up by a pillow or two.  I think sleeping on your back causes more discomfort for you than it does baby.  Your body will tell you when you've had enough, or you are uncomfortable.

  • I do the same thing. I always wake up on my back with the snoogle between my legs. I have had a little success flopping my top leg forward and bottom leg back a little bit. I seem to stay on my side a little longer that way, but still eventually end up on my back.
  • I'm almost 32 weeks and find myself on my back quite regularly. It wakes me up and I turn over.

    Baby is fine.

  • Your body will let you know if the way you're sleeping isn't okay.  With both of my pregnancies I have not been able to stand being on my back or even reclined.  I get sick and towards the end of my first pregnancy I couldn't even lay on my back for exams...I almost fainted during one so they moved me to my side and we had to do exams that way (awkward).  My point is, trust your body.
  • What about a wedge pillow for under your stomach?

You're waking up on your back because your body doesn't like it, it won't just let you sleep on your back if its bad for you. Sadly, that means less sleep. You can find thin pillows out there if you look. But one thing I'd recommend is trying the "running man" sleeping position, which will let your belly rest on the bed. You bend your top leg forward like you're running, letting your hip come forward so you're lying a bit on your stomach. Your bottom leg just curls as much as you need to be comfortable. You're not keeping your top knee resting on your bottom knee... Both legs touch the bed and so you kind of tip forward resting on the bed. I've found this position works a lot better for my hips and keeps my belly from dragging on my back.

I tried this last night and it was AMAZING!! I only woke up once and that was to use the restroom! Woke up this morning with no hip, side or back pain!! Thanks soo much for this idea!! My DH also thanks you bc I wasn't rolling around all night trying to get comfy! Big Smile

This. I was also going to suggest this sleep position. It was recommended to me with my first and it was the only way I could sleep. Sometimes I would use pillows with this position but overall it was the most comfortable position for me to sleep in.

  • I've been placing  one pillow behind me and slightly tucked under my back at night. During most nights it prevents me from turning on my back. Other nights I unconsciously remove the pillow and wake up with it on the floor. But as others has mentioned your body will indicate when you should turn over.

  • I use a Snoogle and a pregnancy pillow wedge.  Sometimes I'll put the wedge under my back and sleep on my back for a little bit.
  • The nippy body pillow has a little stomach pillow that goes between belly and the bed. Maybe that could work? I bought one from target tried it and decided to stick with my regular body pillow but I was able to return it. So maybe take it for a test drive.

  • I totally understand about the belly needing to be propped up thing.  I use one of those circular travel neck pillows.  Mine is filled with buckwheat hulls, and I just took enough of them out for it to be comfy.  It works really well!
