Any Aflac policy holders?

My boss is a good friend of mine, and she knows how much anxiety I have over going on maternity leave. I am the breadwinner of my family (this is our first baby), and my husband currently makes half of what I do. Right now we are just scraping by, and still building savings. Our lease is up in October, and the rent will increase if we stay, which we cannot afford. So we need to move. When I go on leave I will be getting 55% of my income. My boss recommended I look into an Aflac policy to make up the difference in my leave pay. She got a policy when her husband got injured in a car wreck and couldn't work. Just wondering if anyone out there has ever done this, and if they recommend it too?

I looked into it and you have to get through an employer that offers it and there's a ten month wait for maternity use. I was trying really hard to get it for like a month. And since its not health insurance there is a pre existing condition clause

If you find a way around it I'd love to know!
  • I tried to do this with my last DD, but a PP hit it right on. You have to be a policy holder for 10+ months before delivery. I enrolled this past November and by the skin of my teeth should make it for this one. I'm going to take 12 weeks off, and my payout from Aflac will be about 6 weeks of pay - I also have two weeks paid vacation I'm holding on to.

Can you put in some overtime to increase savings pre mat leave? Or can hubby pick up a part time short term job to add some cushion between now and delivery? How about canceling the cable tv or reviewing your current offer from your provider?

I had a feeling you all would say that! Seemed too good to be true. Because of my high hourly pay I can't do overtime. I have been working as much as possible within those parameters though! DH needs to work more, or get a better job for sure. He's applying but no luck yet. I can't help but think ahead! I'm very frugal, I budget every dollar that comes in twice a month. We don't have cable, we never go out, and I have us on a 60/week grocery budget. I cook at home. Trust me, if there were any more corners to cut I'd be hacking away by now!!
