July 2012 Moms

I judged

We were at the pool this morning, and there was a little girl and her mom there too.  The little girl was maybe 6 months older than LO.  Both DH and I are in the pool with him, because even though he walks really well, if he slips and falls in the pool, he's underwater.  The other mom is sitting in a chair away from the side of the pool, with her little girl in the pool.  Small side eye, but whatever.

We got out to feed LO lunch, and have our backs turned to the pool.  I hear her yell her little girl's name, jump out of her chair and run into the pool.  Her little girl had fallen under the water and was on the other side of the pool from her.  The little girl was under water for 7-10 seconds.  The mom yanked her out (sputtering) and toweled her off.  Commence convo between DH and I about hopefully the mom being more careful.

Next time I look over at the pool, the girl is back in, and the mom is on the pool deck with her back to the pool fiddling with her phone.  Yeah, I judged the mom real hard at that point.

Ugh! People are idiots. I wouldn't even let my 4 year old do that. You should be within arms reach at all times with anyone under two! But I guess that's just my opinion.

ITA. I told DH that someone would be with LO in the pool at all times until he's 4. Honestly though, by then we'll have at least one more, so it'll be longer.

People shouldn't be allowed to bring their phones into the pool area, I swear! I'm so glad nothing worse happened to the little girl!

I never really paid attention to other parents at the pool before Dylan came along, but I've been surprised at the lack of attention I've seen paid to the children in the pool at my subdivision. Last weekend we took Dylan to the pool and there was also a small party going on there so several extra kids in the pool. My H was holding Dylan in the water, with his back turned to a few kids. I was able to see the whole pool area and suddenly saw a boy (maybe 6 or 7) with his head just above water and a look of panic on his face (the start of the "silent drowning" thing we've been hearing about). I was on my way over to him when some other kids also noticed and began making some noise and another adult gave him a noodle from the side of the pool. I felt my heart jump into my throat, but felt like no one else thought it was a big deal.  A group of three adults were there, but no one was carefully supervising the kids. I saw some phone fiddling as well.

Oh how scary! I can't even imagine! I know how hard my adrenaline was pumping with this girl, and I wasn't even involved.

ITA with the no phones in the pool area. However, I feel like folks will just do something else to not pay attention to their kids. Most people seem to think the pool is a place for a break from their kids, but, if anything, you should be watching them more closely.

  • I don't get some people. I don't let my almost 4 year old near the little backyard kiddie pool without an adult right there, and she definitely doesn't go into a big pool without an adult (not that she would be ok with it anyway, since she's afraid of the water!). Things can happen in the blink of an eye. My own little brother fell in the pool when he was about 3. We were looking at him on the steps, turned away for a second, and when we looked back, his head was underwater. So, so scary!

  • Thats crazy.  I would judge hard too.  I lifeguarded for 2 summers in High School and it's ingrained in me to "watch" the pool when I'm there.  I always look at the kids and it is amazing how many parents don't pay attention!
