Babies: 3 - 6 Months

Sick baby :

she's five months and NEVER been sick
she's not in pain, but she's been spitting up a little and coughing and has a runny nose and her whole body is warm and I took her temp and hit a read of 99
I gave her a bath to try and bring it down and it came up at 96
but she's gotten warm again :
what should I do?

Re: Sick baby :

  • Snuggle her, give tylenol to help with the fever, and make sure to keep her hydrated. There is not much else you can do, and it sucks. I hate when my children are sick, I always just want to make it magically disappear so I can have my happy baby back! Baths are definitely a good option.

  • There's not much to do other than run a humidifier, use a nasal aspirator, etc. 99 isn't really considered a fever in an infant, so I wouldn't worry about the temp.
  • Even if a baby has a fever, don't give tylenol or motrin unless they are acting like it's bothering them.  Fevers fight infection and are best left alone.

Just cuddle and let her sleep.

This is our approach too.  I don't try to bring a fever down unless it gets to 102.

Our pedi office says to bring it down if it gets to 100.4, but my SIL who is a pedi does the same thing we do, so I follow her advice on this one.

NO MOTRIN!! Babies can not have Motrin until 6 months of age. You can give Tylenol if needed for fever.  But it isn't a fever unless it is above 100.4 . I am a Peds ER nurse, and we do not treat any temp that is lower than that. Good Luck, a sick baby is no fun!
