Home Birth Advice... 35 weeks, 34 years old and starting to loose my calm a little

I live in Ontario and have wonderful midwives and this far have had a healthy pregnancy and very little in the way of complications or concerns. I also live in the country in an old farm house and don't have a car. My husband works A LOT and up to 2 hours away depending on the day, traffic etc. and my Mom lives over an hour away. I've kept busy through my pregnancy with prepping nursery, gardening, housework etc and due to that have stayed fit (I'm normally a landscaper but took the season off to grow our baby girl). I'm hoping to have a home birth as it goes well with my lifestyle and makes me feel in more in control but now that I'm 35 weeks I'm concerned I might forget things that would make the process easier. Have any of you had a home birth and have any advice? It's hard for me to get supplies but could go this weekend with hubby if there's stuff I need... I appreciate any advice as I'm a first time Mom and haven't even been able to do birth classes due to hubby's schedule...

  • Have you talked to the midwifes about this? Mine gave me a list of all the things I would need.
  • Loading the player...
  • I have a midwife coming by tomorrow so will confirm the list items... I think I am just getting a little nervous out here alone so much which is really unusual for me as I don't normally mind being on my own... Just trying to feel prepared for labour while adjusting to country living, suddenly having pregnancy get so much harder to push through physically and no longer having a vehicle (car broke while I've been pregnant
  • Mine said she'll give me a list of everything I need. I'm in Ontario also planning a home birth as a first time mom. If you can pick up an Ina May Gaskin book from the midwives such as Ina May's guide to child birth that will help a lot. And also IMO the birth classes were fear based and made me nervous so I had to push what they said out of my head and focus on what I'd read in that book.
  • Oh and yes it may seem odd to some but something I've found inspiring is watching videos on YouTube of homebirths. We CAN do this! I wish you luck and hopefully that helped!:)
  • I totally understand how you're feeling. We moved to a really small town when I was about 20 weeks and the only family nearby is my boyfriends dad. We've been steadily checking things off the list but I still feel like I'm going to forget something and we pretty much have to drive an hour to get to a real store.
I would also suggest Ina Mays books. Hearing positive birth stories is really helpful. We're also taking a bradley childbirth class which has been great but I'm sure you could get a lot of the same info from a book or online.
  • I always get supplies from Mama Goddess Birth Shop online. They're awesome and usually ship right away. They have 'homebirth kits' or you can just buy what's needed. Honestly, not too much is needed.

  • Thanks ladies! I will look into those books (too scared to watch videos as the only thing other then heights that scares me is medical stuff lol). So nice to have your support... Think I'm finally realizing this is going to happen whether I feel ready or not
  • I don't have anuthing to add except, good luck! Im planning a homebirth as well. My midwife gave me a list of things to have and I got it all together in the last 2 weeks. You still have plenty of time!
  • Midwife just left and happy to say I'm breathing a huge sigh of relief! Turns out I'm having Braxton Hicks and baby is just sitting with her back to mine (guess it's back to gardening to turn her around lol). And she's says our old farmhouse does have wide enough stairs etc. This weekend I can get rest of supplies we need and in the meantime can breathe easy knowing all is well with baby Eden
  • And good luck ladies! Any other advice or ideas to get through this next while is always welcome
