Is it ever so hot outside that it's unsafe?

Mobile bumpies: Is it ever so hot outside that it's unsafe?

So today it is supposed to get up to 99, with a heat index of 100+. Being that I live in Texas, this isn't new and will last (and get much worse) through September. Even though I have grown up here and I'm used to the heat as much as someone can be, I don't enjoy sitting out on a patio when it's 100+, even in the shade, or lounging in someone's pool when it's so hot that the water provides no relief.

But now that I'm 24 weeks along, I'm starting to wonder if there is a point where it is too hot to be outside for an extended period of time? I'm not talking walking from the car to the store, but if someone planned a BBQ and wanted to grill and sit in the shade outside when it's 100+, is that even safe?

Is this something that varies depending on how each person handles heat, or is there a heat index where OBs draw the line?

FYI - I do have an appointment with my OB this afternoon and will ask him this question, but I wanted to see if anyone had asked this before or had any experience.

I'm sure each person's tolerance to heat is different, but my OB did warn me about overheating at my appt on Wednesday.  Make sure you are keeping plenty hydrated and be careful about extended periods of time out in the heat.

  • I live in Arizona and we're regularly over 100 now - between 103 and 111 lately.  My OB just said to make sure I'm drinking plenty of fluids to stay hydrated.  But at those temperatures, it's not like I'm going to be spending much time outside anyway.

I live in Michigan, but even here from time to time we have "heat advisories" where the news will tell you to try to stay cool, indoors, and plenty hydrated.

Pregnant or not human beings are susceptible to dehydration, heat stroke, etc.  Obviously, super high temperature are a factor, but duration of time in the heat, level of hydration, activity level, etc. all have an impact.

Just stay as comfortable as possible and hydrated and you will be fine.  Your body will tell you if you're over-doing it in the heat.

  • I'm curious what your OB will say although I think PP are correct in that your body will tell you what you can and can not handle.

I work in a theme park in Orlando so unfortunately I don't have the option of staying indoors when it's hot.  I think the hottest it's been so far is 103 but the 90% humidity is the killer.  I absolutely love my job but all I want to do is stay inside on my days off.

  • Well, women have been pregnant in much hotter climates with no ac for a few thousand years. People were still having babies. Drink alot and don be super active and I'm sure you'll be fine!

  • I agree with PPs that the main concern would be you need to stay hydrated.

  • A general rule of thumb is: stay hydrated and don't get overheated. But that can vary from person to person. It is a fact that if you are hot, baby is hotter, since he/she can regulate their temp by sweating - only you can. If you are hot, that's one thing. If you are sweating, uncomfortable, your skin feels hot (not just your face), and you just don't feel like being outside is right, then move inside. I think your body will tell you when you are "too" hot.
