Laying on your back

I typically sleep flat on my back but am forcing myself to stay on my sides... Hurts my hips but the snoogle is helping. Sometimes my back hurts so much that I have to lay flat on my back to relieve tension. Is this terrible? Are we allowed to bring our knees up too? I usually do it until I start to feel 'different' in my lower abdomen, then roll to my side.

Re: Laying on your back

  • I'm definitely not a DR., but I don't really change the way I sleep until I have a bump and it's not physically possible to lay the way I like to anymore.  I think it's more of an issue when the baby is much bigger and really taking up space in there and near more of your organs.  Right now you should be okay.  Double check with your Dr. to be sure.

I will not start sleeping on my side until it is needed. With my LO I slept on my side starting pretty early and by the end of my pregnancy my hips hurt so bad it was incredible. Sleeping became impossible because of it. That pain didn't go away until at least a year after my son was born. This time I will not shift out my comfort zone until I have to. Also, my doc told me sleeping on my back was okay with my first pregnancy. I personally can't sleep on my back so I didn't do too much. I would ask your doctor but it may not be a huge deal especially this early on.

I am a back sleeper but have been sleeping on my sides.  I do remember my doctor telling me not to sleep on my back during my last pregnancy.  I cannot remember at how many weeks this was.  I had concerns because I tend to roll onto my back while I am sleeping.  The doctor said the baby/your body will let you know when you need to roll over and it will wake you up.

  • I'm not changing how I sleep because I've been told too, I'm not laying on my back anymore because it's simply uncomfortable. I just can't do it anymore. I don't have a huge bump or anything, but I end up with a super sore back and tummy pain if I lay on my back for longer than 5 minutes.
  • I was a back sleeper to now I sleep on my sides but I had to get a body pillow which is really helpful, they have them at target for 10.00!
  • I am a back sleeper and sometimes side sleeper. I kept trying to sleep on my side but I'd wake up on my back. I asked my midwife and she said not to worry about it, that the back sleeping thing is an American myth. It comes from how it's not the best position for labor. Sleeping or laying on your back is fine.
  • I'm a stomach sleeper and boy does this suck as my bump grows! Can't get comfy for nothing! I guess a body pillow would help bring me to sleeping on my side.
  • I'm a back or tummy sleeper but when pregnant I can't sleep on my back past a certain point, 18ish weeks usually. I get really nauseous and dizzy. Some people do totally fine on their back, your body will let you know.

My Dr. just told me today that I could lay on my back up until 25 weeks. I have a disc injury and laying on my back is one of the only things that provides any relief for me.

  • This is my 3rd pregnancy and my Drs have never mentioned how I should sleep. I mean I have heard that after 17 weeks you should sleep on your side, but I sleep however I am comfortable. Your body will wake up up to move if something is not right.

  • For my first pregnancy my doctor actually showed me the difference in heart beat between laying on my back or my side. The difference was quite drastic though I was further along then than now. I have read that after 12 weeks to start laying on your side.
