Babies on the Brain

Re: (Untitled)

  • I don't see why it would. I had to get my wisdom teeth pulled (i had avoided doing so for a long time, and I got a gum infection while pregnant), and they even put me on a low dose hydrocodone for a few days and I was fine. Sh!tty because they couldn't put me under, just numbing, but my baby turned out ok :)

    Just loud haha

I'm not sure why they would. I had braces for 3 years when I was younger and had no change to my health during that time.

I haven't had the metal braces but have worn invisalign my entire pregnancy.  I got the necessary xrays done before I got pregnant, otherwise there was no reason not to do it simply because of pregnancy.  I guess I can't speak to the metal braces, but I imagine there would be no reason not to do it.

Even though invisalign is "invisible" (which it isn't close up, because of the buttons they put on to keep the liners in place) it does sometimes make me feel like a teen mom ;) I'm sure I'm the only one who felt/thought that though!

  • The only problem I could think of would be the pain. Braces can HURT (I had them twice). It would suck to not be able to take ibuprofen.

I'd be curious to see what your orthodontist would say.  I know that your teeth can slightly loosen during pregnancy, so it might be a great time to do it, lol, but I'm guessing another problem might be that your gums can easily become inflamed when pregnant--cleaning your gums with braces is already very important so it might be more complicated when pregnant.

  • huskymomma brought up a great point about oral care being really important during pregnancy, and how it's a little more difficult to do with braces.

I have a personal experience to contribute - keep in mind this is entirely anecdotal, but here we go...

My mom had braces when she was pregnant with me.  She STILL complains to this day about how the orthodontist screwed the whole thing up.  She says he should have known that pregnant women's teeth loosen (and I guess are more pliable) during pregnancy.  So she got the braces, and by the time she came in for her next appointment, her teeth had OVER corrected - they went from leaning slightly to the left PAST the centerline and were now leaning to the RIGHT!

I think the guy ended up taking the braces off entirely until the pregnancy was over, then putting them on AGAIN to correct the over-correction a few months after I was born.

As huskymomma also mentioned, braces HURT.  They just make your whole mouth super sore and tender, and the metal type rubs against the inside of your mouth and causes little cuts and blisters.  So even though my mom complains about her ordeal to this day, I kinda can't blame her.

But keep in mind, this was one person's experience, and this was 30(cough) years ago.  Good luck with whatever you decide!

  • I don't see why wearing braces would affect your pregnancy at all.  Just keep brushing your teeth and usual and you'll be fine!

  • Braces generally shouldn't be a problem, but make sure you really keep up with your cleanings and flossing. I not only had braces at some point in my life, but I also worked in a dental office and flossing and regular cleanings were very important for pregnant women. As long as you do that, it should be fine.
  • My husband's cousin's wife is pregnant, and she got braces before she got pregnant. I'm 99% sure the pregnancy was unexpected, but everything seems perfectly fine with her, and her pregnancy.

The worst part of braces during pregnancy (had them with Kat) was morning sickness.  Think about it.

Other wise just avoid Xrays if you are pregnant.

Ooh, I forgot about the morning sickness.  With invisalign you go back to get your new liners every few weeks.  I ended up delaying by an entire month because I wasn't wearing my liners during the morning sickness phase.  It's just gross to go and puke and then pull out your liners to clean them...
