I've heard the first few postpartum cycles can be a bit wonky, in terms of timing, duration and/or flow. I bet it will straighten itself out in the coming months.
Are you taking combination birth control pills where you have a week every 28 days with no hormones? Or are you taking the mini-pill and breastfeeding?
This sounds a lot like me. When I got my BC (mini-pill, since I'm still BFing), I bled for the first day or two on the mini-pill. Then, I have had nothing and DS is 5 1/2 months old! However, just on Friday, I noticed some spotting -- some red, some brownish, but never very much (hardly enough to fill a pad or pantyliner). I am assuming that this is the beginning of AF returning, but I do understand that the first few periods will be all out of sorts, so I'm trying to just go with the flow (no pun intended!). :-) If this bleeding keeps up for too much longer though, I might call my OB/GYN just to confirm that this is my period.
Good luck, hope that helps you! :-)

Since you're BFing your cycles are likely going to be wonky. You shouldn't be ovulating while on the mini-pill so any bleeding isn't a true period per se, you're basically just having breakthrough bleeding/bleeding from your hormones fluctuating. I don't think what you're experiencing is at all atypical and I wouldn't worry about it, personally.
