Babies: 9 - 12 Months

Throwing food

I see and hear all these other mommies feed finger foods from their babies tray. I have tried this a few times, and all he does is throw it everywhere. I even show him how to pick it up and put the food in his mouth. He stares at my, grabs a handful, and flings. I can pick up pieces and put it in his mouth. Either he doesn't get it yet, or he feels like he is a little prince that is too good to eat with his handsSmile

Re: Throwing food

  • At this age, they're just learning.  I just started giving my LO finger foods over the last few days.  The first time, he just slung it all around his tray and onto the floor.  That was peas and carrots.  He didn't even try to eat it.  The next day, same thing.  The third day, I was eating spaghetti so I gave him some little noodles and meat and he ate it up as best he could.  Last night it was stir fry veggies and he did better and ate it.  It's just practice for now, keep trying and he'll find something he likes and get the hang of it.

  • Is there a food he really likes so he would be motivated to feed himself?  I can put fruit, cheese, etc. on his tray and he could care less but he will feed himself cheese puffs and bread all day.  My little guy will feed himself, but he has no interest if taking a bottle or sippy cup, so I am equally frustrated just with a different issue.  I also got this container which has a lid and he can reach his hand in and grab snacks and they can't fall out and make a mess.  I fill this up with cheese puff and let him have it in his lap on the car ride to his grandma's everyday.  Yeah sometimes he drops them, but I like letting him practice feeding himself.

He will eat puffs from his tray but they aren't exactly nutrition.

  • Ours thinks it's funny to spit the food out like she's sticking her tongue out at you. We carefully chose what we're feeding now based on what we're wearing =)
  • I feed LO from the tray but towards the end of a meal when she's less hungry she "plays" more and will fling some food on the ground. I noticed if I say a stern NO she actually smiles and wants to do it more. I generally just say "no thanks, this is yummy"...more ends up in the mouth than the floor so I'm ok with it. My dog is an awesome vacuum cleaner ;)

Have you tried just putting 1 or 2 bites in front of LO on the tray. When my LO gets real bad I keep a plate by me and only give her 1 or 2 bites at a time. Atleast then fist fulls don't end up thrown.
