I lived in Phx for 3 years and never had a problem with it. The only preventative measures I took were to close car & house windows when it was windy & you could see dust in the air and I kept my car's air conditioning on the recycle feature. My brother lives in Phx and came down with Valley Fever once but it was just like a long cold.
Valley Fever is also a risk for dogs & other animals. My dogs never had a problem but my friend's dog caught it but he was digging at the time.
I wouldn't worry about your child catching it, especially just over a vacation, as long as you don't take them outside during a dust storm, etc.
I've lived here practically my whole life. Amost everyone I know has had Valley Fever, but most people never know they had it. Symptoms can range from very mild to moderate to severe (rare). I had a physical where they did a chest x-ray a few years back and that is when I found out I had had it at some point in my life. Never knew it, though.
I really wouldn't let keep you from visiting.
Thanks ladies. I appreciate your insight. I really find it to be quite scary considering that the disease can potentially cross tissue - I just don't think it is worth it for a vacation.... One of my co-worker's daughter contracted it while traveling (she is only in her 20s) - it took over a year to diagnose because we are unfamiliar with it on the east coast. It has pretty much ruined her life so far and she is nowhere near recovered (it moved into her nervous system). I am just wondering if this is something you guys hear about or if this is a "once in the moon" occurance.
Not sure if your still checking this but I came across it and figured I would reply (a few days late).
I grew up in AZ and like PP said most people who live there get it (I think it's over 50%) but never know they have it. When DH first moved there after college he got it and developed symptoms within a few months. That being said, he also has an autoimmune disorder so that was why everything progressed so quickly. He was fine in about a month.
We lived in the part of the state where valley fever was the worst (surpirse, az which is all farm land) and never even thought about it harming DS. Personally, I wouldn't be too worried but it is your call as a parents.
