c-section scheduled due to macrosomia

Yeah my baby had an estimated weight of 5.5lbs at 33 weeks...so my ob informed me today that we will be having a scheduled c section on the 17th or 18th of May. I havent really done a ton of research on c section because it was never in my plans to have one. Can someone give me some insight about how it was after birth...recovery....how long you stayed in the hospital....etc.

Re: c-section scheduled due to macrosomia

  • Are you OK with this?  Because it should be a partnership with your OB, not just them informing you.  What about a second growth scan closer to your EDD?

To answer your question though, there is a c-section board, perhaps XP over there.  Good luck!

  • Yeah im fine with it...is it what i wanted? No....but I trust my doctor and his experience. I will be 39 weeks and 2 days on the day im scheduled so its not like he is taking her super early.
  • I "had" to have a c section w my first and plan for a VBAC with this baby. At 31 weeks I measured a 5lb 2 oz baby and my doctor wants to do another ultra sound at 37 wks to see how big he is, also "macrosomia" but she said she is fine with me delivering vaginally as long as baby isn't over 10lbs, and that's bc possible rupture of my old incision. Not all doctors do what is best, I had a douche bag OB last time around and changed for this baby. It's up to you but I can tell you it's not fun recovering from a c section, watch a video, especially if you don't have to. I would rly research this topic! Btw, doctors make a lot more money by doing a c section and the health risks are a lot higher for you too. So, if you don't HAVE to I wouldn't.
  • Oh yah! Let me answer your question!! My c section was awful. I was in labor for 18 hours and then had one bc my doctor got tired of waiting basically and my water had broken. I was in the hospital for 4 days, recovery took at least 6-8 months to feel almost completely normal again. I tried working out at about 3 months post op bc im an athletic person and almost put myself back in the hospital. When they do the surgery, they cut through fat, muscle, fascia, uterus, it's many layers and it's considered a major abdominal surgery. Plus it's more expensive.
  • I honestly would try to labor and push. I had a csection with my first son. I pushed for 3 hours and he wouldn't engage. They called it failure to defend. They said he was probably too big. The dr didn't take note during the csection if he was in a funny position and that was the problem. He was 7lbs 11oz. I went to vbac with my daughter and the nurses were saying if he was too big she was gonna be too big. And pushing me for a csection. I had my successful vbac. She was 8lbs 15oz. With my second son I also had a vbac. He was 9lbs 8oz out in 10 mins and not one stitch. With a csection it is major surgery and they want to limit how many they do because with each one the risks for complications are higher. It is easier for the dr to just do a csection its scheduled. I have a pinched nerve in my fascia that still gives me problems 7 years later. It hurts to walk or laugh. It makes breastfeeding more difficult. Don't get me started on stairs or getting in and out of cars. My sister in laws step kids mom died a week after her csection. She threw a blood clot that went to her heart and killed her. It is very serious. You never know how big your baby will be and what your body is capable of till you try.
  • Yikes. My baby is also measuring 35.5 weeks at 33 weeks... Doc is also talking possible c section, but too soon to tell. Good luck with your situation!
  • My baby is measuring 42 weeks and I'm 37 and 5 today. I am having a c section due to her size. Just keep in mind recovery from a scheduled c section is different than an emergency one after hours of labor (some of the stories above). Good luck and wishing you and baby a happy and healthy delivery!!
